Lara Beach Holidays

Sitting pretty on Turkey’s southwest coastline is Lara Beach, a glamorous resort that’s packed with glitzy hotels and hot entertainment. In fact, it’s often seen as Turkey’s answer to Las Vegas, except here you get the added benefit of a picture-postcard 8km-long beach. If you can tear yourself away from the sights and sounds of the resort for the day, then a trip to historic Antalya is in order (it’s the biggest city on the Turkish Med), or how about a ticket to the nearby waterpark if you’re travelling with kids? Lara Beach holidays are the perfect choice if you want family fun in the sun.

Take a stroll along Lara Beach’s sun-soaked waterfront and set up for a day on the sand. Grab a sun lounger and sit back in the sun for a while, before heading out for a snorkel in the sea. There are lots of luxurious hotels along the waterfront, all of which come with their own entertainment, bars and restaurants. That makes Lara Beach holidays perfect for couples, groups or families. You can find everything you need here. If you love a bit of retail therapy, check out the designer shops, or pick up a souvenir at the local markets. For a fun-filled day out with the kids, head for Troy Aqua Park. Culture vultures will prefer the ancient city of Antalya, which is brimming with history.

Sun, sea and sand await at the Blue Flag beach. This 8km stretch is mostly golden sand, with a few patches of pebbles along the way. Just along from the seafront hotels, you’ll find a public area dotted with sun loungers and parasols for hire. The warm, shallow waters make for safe paddling and swimming with little ones. Snorkelling and diving are also popular here, so why not don your gear and see what lies beneath the turquoise sea?

Chic waterfront hotels are a big draw for many here, and lots of them are modelled on world-famous landmarks like the Kremlin or Titanic. Many even come with their own swanky pools and private beaches; it doesn’t get much more exclusive than that. You’ll notice that much of the nightlife and entertainment is hotel-based, so you won’t even need to leave the confines of your hotel if you don’t want to during your holiday. When it comes to food, there’s plenty of variety; you can enjoy everything from authentic Turkish cuisine to world-class Italian restaurants.

You can expect top-notch shopping, too, with modern shopping malls selling designer clothing. You’ll also find a host of traditional markets where you can pick up a souvenir; there are handmade crafts, jewellery and unique gifts galore.

With a Lara Beach holiday, you’re well placed to sample more of what the region has to offer. A firm family favourite is Troy Aqua Park, which is a great place to cool off for a day. It’s only an hour’s drive away from the resort, and you’ll find all kinds of waterslides to slide down (there are 15 in total), as well as a surf simulator, and wave pools. Some spots are reserved for children only; they’re perfect for paddling.

For a taste of Turkish culture, it’s well worth heading for Antalya; it’s only 12km away, or a 20-minute bus ride. You won’t want to miss Kaleci, the beautifully preserved old town, with its winding streets and Roman gate that dates back to the second century. If you want a cup of coffee or a boat charter, head for the marina. Antalya museum is another highlight; here you’ll find a rows of fascinating Greek and Roman relics.

Lara Beach is best for...

Beach lovers: Calling all sun worshippers: the 8km golden-sand beach is the perfect spot to catch a few rays. There’s a pretty promenade, too, where you can grab a bite to eat or a cocktail (or two).

Families: Wide beaches and calm, clear waters make holidays here ideal for families. Water sports will keep older kids entertained during the day, before mini-discos take over for the little ones at night. Plus, there’s always the super slides at nearby Troy Aquapark.

Shopaholics: Whether you prefer chic boutiques or bustling markets, your Lara Beach holiday calls for a little retail therapy. Load up your Thomas Cook Cash Passport before you go to lock into the best rates, and you’ll have even more money in your pocket for those special treats.

Weather and climate

Temperature: Average high of 33°C in July.

Best time to visit: April and May, which are slightly cooler but still sunny

Situated on the Turkish Med, Lara Beach enjoys around 300 days of sunshine a year, with long summers and mild winters. Temperatures start to climb in April, rising to 30°C in June and July. Beach-friendly weather runs right into October, and it’s a bit less busy at this time of year, too.

Getting around

By dolmus: Take the dolmus (they’re the local mini buses) alongside the beach to find your ideal spot; it’s like having your own shuttle! They’re a quick and easy way to get around the resort, and you can hop on and off as you like. If your Lara Beach holiday is on a tight budget then this is a great way to save some money.

By bus: If you want to venture beyond the resort, there’s a regular bus that connects the resorts along the coastline. You can get to the city of Antalya from here in about 20 minutes, and tickets are really affordable.

By taxi: Look out for the yellow taxis; they’re easy to spot and readily available. They run on a meter, but it’s wise to ask for an estimated price before you hop in. They also make for a simple and affordable airport transfer; Antalya Airport is just under 30 minutes away, so they won’t break the bank.

Events

Sand sculpture festival: From June onwards, the beach welcomes the International Antalya Sand Sculpture Festival. This is one of the biggest event of its kind in the world, and hundreds of sandy creations are based on a different theme every year. This is extreme sandcastle building!

Opera and ballet: Over in Antalya, a highlight of the annual events calendar is the International Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival. It’s a sophisticated affair, taking place in the spectacular 2,000-year-old open-air Aspendos Amphitheatre. The acoustics are just unbelievable, and it’s an absolute must for culture fans.
