Getting around Ciutadella

By foot: The easiest way to travel around the town is by foot. Ciutadella is relatively compact, and many of its shops and top attractions are within walking distance from one another.   

By bicycle: Menorca is a cycle-friendly destination, featuring plenty of bicycle lanes and bike hire stations.  

By bus: Menorca has a straightforward, reliable bus system. There are several stops located throughout Ciutadella, meaning hopping on a bus is a great way to explore the area if you don’t fancy walking. 

Events in Ciutadella

Fiestas of Sant Joan: Every year during the Summer Solstice, Ciutadella holds the Fiestas of Sant Joan – a traditional event that celebrates Sant Joan (John the Baptist). This is the most spectacular festival across the Balearic Islands, taking place over three days. Most people come to take in the spectacle that is Caragol des Born, a procession of horses and skilful riders making their way through Ciutadella’s main square.  

Ciutadella Music Festival: This is an annual music festival held in the cloister of the city’s Church of El Socorro seminary. It first took place in 1973 and features a programme of performances by opera singers, orchestras and musicians.  

Ciutadella Markets: Every Saturday, open-air markets are held in Ciutadella’s Plaza del Mercat, from 7am until 1pm. Here, you can purchase a range of Menorcan items, such as crafts and flowers, alongside fruit and vegetables. A fish market is also held in the same location and takes place from Tuesday to Saturday between 7am and 2pm.

Temperature: Ciutadella has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and mild winters. The hottest month of the year is August when the average maximum temperature is 30°C. The coldest month is January when the average maximum temperature is 14°C.   

Best time to visit: If you want to make the most of Ciutadella’s fabulous climate, the best time to visit is between June and August. Those hoping to relax on Ciutadella’s picturesque beaches and swim in the sea, should head here from June to October when the water is warm and pleasant.
