Holidays to Icmeler in Turkey are perfect if you want to enjoy the quieter side of life. Popular with families looking for laid-back days on the beach and couples who want leisurely meals by night, this beautiful beach resort offers everything you could want to kick back and relax. Much lower-key than its vibrant neighbour, Marmaris, it started life as a small fishing village. It’s blossomed into a sophisticated holiday destination, while still retaining bucket-loads of its original charm. The beach offers golden sands and blue seas and is maintained by the locals, who are fiercely proud of what is the resort’s greatest draw. In town, you’ll find a good selection of shops and some superb, authentic restaurants. For a real taste of Turkey, try out one of the ‘lokantas’, also known as ‘tradesmen’s restaurants’, where the locals go for quick, convenient and home-cooked food. If you’re on holiday in Icmeler with the kids, the resort is within easy reach of Marmaris’ top attractions, such as the Atlantis Waterpark.

Icmeler’s beach is spectacular with dark, golden sand, and is backed by a leafy promenade. Ideal for those travelling with little ones, the shore shelves gently into the sapphire seas, giving them plenty of opportunity to splash about. If you can bear to tear yourself from your sun lounger, the resort has plenty up its sleeve to see and do. The midweek markets are the perfect hunting ground for those looking to bag a bargain, while kids will love a day out at Atlantis Waterpark, popular with all ages for its water slides, wave pool and mini-golf. In the evenings, pick a family-friendly bar for after-dinner drinks and, if the raki is working its magic, join in with the karaoke.
Perfumed by eucalyptus trees and fringed with palms, the horseshoe-shaped beach melts gently into clear, blue waters. With the sea temperature ranging from mild in the winter, to wonderfully warm in the summer, you can take a dip at virtually any time of year. The busy promenade winds its way towards Marmaris and is lined with beachfront cafés and restaurants. If you‘d like to add a shot of adrenaline to your holiday, you’ll find a good range of water sports on offer, such as water-skiing and banana boating. If that’s a little too lively, take a more leisurely approach with a ride in a pedal boat. The crystal-clear water is also popular with scuba divers and snorkelers.
Haggling is something of a national pastime in Turkey and you can put your skills to the test at the midweek market. Amongst the handmade arts and crafts, jewellery, rugs and perfumes, you just might find that once-in-a-lifetime bargain! If you’re looking for nightlife, you can either hop in a dolmus or walk along the promenade towards Marmaris. While it doesn’t offer the club-centric chaos of larger resorts, there’s still a good choice of bars that develop a sociable crowd after dark, with a variety of restaurants including BBQ grills, Indian and Italian. If you’re keen to try some authentic Turkish cuisine, the best place in Icmeler is the waterfront, where you can share mezzes or tasty koftas.
If you’re taking your holidays to Icmeler Turkey with the kids, the chances are you’re going to need some entertainment aces up your sleeve. The Atlantis Waterpark, in neighbouring Marmaris, makes an ideal day out for kids of all ages. Youngsters can enjoy the dedicated kids’ pool, with low-key rides such as the Octopus Arms and the Mushroom Shower. Older children and adults who are big kids at heart can test their nerves against rides and slides such as the Black Hole, the Kamikaze, and Free Fall!
Boat trips along the spectacular coast are favourites with families, where you can drop anchor and swim or snorkel in the bays. Make sure you keep an eye out for turtles, as the beaches in this part of Turkey are known nesting sites for Loggerheads and Caretta Carettas.
