Not what I expect from a Wyndham resort

May 2022 | emptynst55

I stayed at a Wyndham resort in Jamaica several years ago and this one certainly didn't live up to their quality. The good things: The nightly entertainment was geared for both children and adults at different times, which was nice. The hotel seem to have nice facilities for kids to play while the parents were off doing other things. Beach was nice and life guard was on duty. They had a nice coffee shop and coffee, hot cocoa, and cinnamon rolls were available with other choices each morning. The hotel was clean, service and staff was excellent, rooms were nice, but.... The not so nice stuff: Food wasn't great and while we did not go into the Mexican restaurant on site, there wasn't anything that we would have call "fine dining." If it hadn't been for the excellent Italian restaurant across the street, we wouldn't have had any great food. We went to the beach party at the resort that they had for supper one night, the steak was so tough that you couldn't cut it with a knife or tear it apart with your teeth. Internet was unreliable. I felt sorry for anyone that needed it for work purposes. While there were two nice pools, with one of them being in the kids area and close to their playhouse, both pools were open to kids. Would have been nice to have an "adult only" pool, especially when some of the words to the songs they played at the larger pool weren't for little ears. There was also lots of drinking around the main pool and words such as "sexy body" were often said during aerobics. There were no water spots, except for parasailing. The required Covid room rate protection form that we were required to sign at check in, as well as upfront fee if we wanted it, was not something I would think a Wyndham hotel would require. It was not a first class way to treat your guest upon arrival. We had lots of sun and enjoyed what we could of this resort, but we will never be back.

Thank you, Juan Carlos for excellent service! Wonderful food with great presentation. Azul’s at Wyndham Ulltra has the best Spare Ribs, Chicken Ramen, and the house drink (some kind of tea) was amazing!

Great for families with young children

I so wish we had stayed at this resort when our kids were younger. This hotel is definitely geared toward young kids but had very little for our teens. There are a million little kids at this resort, a ton of children activities, evening kid entertainment and a very cool kids pool area. There was almost nothing for teens. They do have a teen's club which is open from 12-8pm and nothing for them to do after 8 (no pool tables, ping pong tables in the common areas). The teen club had no air conditioning and it was stifling. They had a virtual reality game but the teens were limited to 10 minutes a day. If you wanted to play VR longer there was a cost. The teen club was empty both times we checked it out but that might have been because it was a thousand degrees in there. Not a place that was inviting. Usually our teens are involved in the daily activities but there wasn't a ton to do. They did have beach volleyball, occasionally different beach games (bocce, spikeball), a fun pool game every day but the entertainment staff didn't go out of their way to get people involved. And times of activities were estimates at best so hard to know you were in the right place or if the activity was going on at all. We loved our room. The room was multi-level, we had a king size bed and down a few stairs our daughter had a full size bed. There was a huge room were the toilet and shower were so plenty of room to change if you needed privacy. Not a ton of bureau space for 3 people but we made do. The hammock on the deck was nice and we ended up with a partial beach view which was beautiful. The shower was great, the bed comfortable and the maid service was fantastic. We ate at the buffet for breakfast and always found something we liked. Had an egg station, waffle/pancake/beignet/churro station and various hot dishes everyday. Went for lunch a couple of times-meatloaf station everyday, a grill with different meats/fish, pizza station and usually another hot entree choice. You could ask for a plate to go and take your food back out to the beach/pool-loved this. Only thing really missing from the buffet was a decent salad bar. They had lettuce every day but nothing else (no tomatoes, cucumbers etc). They had a food stand by the pool with daily specials for lunch. The taco bar near the beach bar was fantastic. Chose to do the restaurants every night for dinner. We liked them all. Can't beat the view or the service at Sunset - thank you Santiago and Salomon! Our waiter, Daniel at the Mexican restaurant was also very good. The beach was wonderful. Cleaned up seaweed every day. If you want a palapa you definitely need to get there early, probably before 8-8:30. Chair service (thanks Maclivio!) and the beach bar was usually pretty fast. Pretty much the same for the pool area, service was good (thank you Diego!) and you had to get there early for an umbrella. The pool is ridiculously small for the number of guests at the resort and it is full of kids. I'm a pool person but it was a bacteria-frappe by mid-day, seriously you could see the water getting cloudy as the day progressed. There was an instance of a floating poop one afternoon-it was fished out discreetly and taken away. No call to get out of the pool and no added chemicals that we could see and trust me I was watching, lol. Completely disgusting. They had kid entertainment early evening and then adult entertainment in the lobby later. We really enjoyed the adult entertainment. Lots of dancing and guest participation. Jose at the lobby bar was great. We never did the nightly shows as we were always eating at that time. We were invited to do the tequila tasting with Gerardo. Very interesting! Highly recommend. We wouldn't come back but I would definitely recommend this resort for those with young children.
