BORGOTERRA HOTEL
Beautiful hotel located in the historical center of Martano Italy with a wonderful layout of the rooms that take you back to the 15th century. Many thanks to the excellent hostess Mrs. Dina for her hospitality.
Unique, wonderful, superb
We were amazed when we arrived... What an amazing place! I've never been anywhere like it! It is like arriving (for an English person) in another world. Borgoterra is a former convent in a narrow traditional Italian street in the old part of Martano. Each "room" is in fact a suite - we had a bedroom, living room, kitchenette and en-suite shower room / toilet. We also had a lovely little terrace on which to sit out. Beautifully furnished with heavy drapes, dark furniture, a very wonderful feel! I must respectfully disagree most strongly with another recent review only giving two stars: We too were in the Monaco suite which that reviewer stayed in, and although occasionally we could hear conversation from next door (because the two suites can be hired as one, and a linking door opened in such eventualities) this was only occasionally and was not disruptive in any way. Also, the breakfast was superb - an array of cakes, breads, Italian breakfast delicacies (different each day), fruit, boiled eggs, yogurt, cereal, home made jam, coffee, tea, water, fruit juice - we thought it was wonderful, as well as being in a truly lovely room. Thank you to the wonderful staff. We thought this place was wonderful and unique and recommend it without hesitation.
Beware the half board scam
Borgoterra could be a really interesting place to stay - the apartments have character and sit in the old town (a couple of streets only). However there is plenty to detract from the experience. The rooms are a little shabby, the bathroom was unimpressive and the kitchenette as good as pointless. But that isn’t the main problem. The noise from the adjacent apartment was ridiculous - at first we thought the guests were noisy but when they left and another set moved in there was no difference. We were in the middle of their conversations - as no doubt they were in ours. There was absolutely no sound proofing between the walls. We were in Monaca - no idea which one was on the other side of the wall. The breakfast is terrible - the worst we’ve had in Italy. Preprepared stewed coffee and mass produced cakes from the local low cost supermarket. Not worth it - you can have a fantastic breakfast at a local bar. Worst though was the “convenzione” with the local restaurant. We were told to book through them because they had a special deal with the restaurant. We were not billed by the restaurant for the two meals we had there. When we came to settle the hotel bill they charged us a set price for the dinner, which was almost double the price of what we had actually ordered. When challenged they said the cost covered two courses and a standard wine. However, they had not explained this beforehand and when we explained we had only taken a pizza and a couple of beers they shrugged and were unprepared to move on this. The set up is designed to rip off tourists and says much about the motivations of the business - no doubt explaining the other issues as well.
