Days may be a little cooler (around 20°C) at the beginning of the month, but once you reach the end, they’ll start to hover around the 24°C mark with average highs rising to a toasty 27°C. With spring slowly turning into summer, humidity levels nowhere near their peak and hurricanes not arriving until at least June, you can make the most of the state’s outdoor fun. Plus, travelling long haul can be expensive so if you want to save some pennies, you can usually find plenty of Florida spring bargains as long as you book in advance.

Dominican Republic, Caribbean

If you’re after guaranteed heat with toasty evenings that don’t require a jacket? The Dominican Republic offers a taste of the tropics in May. And on top of that you can also look forward to perks such as less-crowded sands, affordable hotels and inviting sea temperatures. You’ve got some pretty great shorelines too, from the powdery white sand of Bávaro in Punta Cana to the mountainous backdrops of Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata. The odd shower is possible, but they usually come and go pretty quickly so you’ll be back sunbathing on the beach before you know it.
