Bahia Principe Grand Jamaica

Bahia Principe Grand Jamaica is set on its own private mile-long beach in the peaceful, out-of-town Runaway Bay. The beach is split into two halves to cater for tourists' needs; one is quiet for those want to relax, and the other features water activities including snorkelling, kayaking and paddle boarding out on the Caribbean Sea. The hotel welcomes guests of all ages. There's a kids' club, a playground and a games room where younger guests can make friends. They can also use the hotel's own water park, which features a number of water slides. Adults can indulge in the spa, which includes a sauna, steam room and a heated indoor pool, and take part in a variety of sports. Bahia Principe Grand Jamaica also has its own mini shopping centre, which is made up of clothes shops, souvenir stores, a jewellers and a pharmacy. Runaway Bay is set slightly away from the main resort. If you're looking for shops, restaurants and nightlife, you'll find them in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Both towns are within driving distance. They have popular shopping malls and plenty of cafÈs, tavernas and bars that serve both local and international food and drinks.

The hotel is on the beach at Runaway Bay, and lies 400m from the resort centre. It serves as a base from which to explore the Green Grotto Caves 6km to the west, which are believed to be 500,000 years old. Amateur divers will enjoy exploring the coral reef and shipwrecks that lie out in the Caribbean. Runaway Bay is quiet, but the busier tourist resorts of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay are 30km and 70km away. In Ocho Rios you can visit the locations used in the Bond film Dr No, while Montego Bay is the island's bustling 'Second City'.

The Grand Bahia Principe Jamaica has five restaurants, with two offering buffet options at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Three · la carte restaurants serve Japanese, Italian and barbecue cuisine. There's also a pool bar and a sports bar which shows live sports on the big screen.

The hotel has two outdoor swimming pools, plus a gym and tennis courts. Entertainment is hosted throughout the week, with a bar serving until late.

Large and nice pool area with a lagoon shaped pool. Grand Bahia Principe Jamaica also has a water park near the beach.

The rooms at Grand Bahia Principe Jamaica have air conditioning, satellite TV and a minibar, as well as a balcony or terrace.

My family and I stay at different resorts in Jamaica every 3-4 months. Until recently, we avoided Bahia Principe as local friends have advised for various reasons. Not sure why I did not stick to that but, I learned my lesson the hard way. The hotel is dirt cheap for a reason - buildings are pretty dated. Pillows are like cushions, there were no blankets, towels or toiletries in the rooms when we checked in. We were a party of 8 people with ocean facing rooms with great views. Numerous calls to the front desk that night would result in one of each item being delivered to one room. The others gave up after 11pm and made do. The restaurants were all booked during our stay; the buffet was a massive feeding frenzy, but the food was delicious. If you're Jamaican, you're liable to be ignored by restaurant staff for long periods of time or the entire meal until the less Jamaican-looking members of our party were with us. We originally booked for 9 people; but prior to travel, one person was unable to travel. I emailed Bahia and during several exchanges, was advised we could receive a resort credit to use at the hotel. Great. We arrive at the hotel and it is immediately obvious that the staff at this hotel are poorly trained. You will be ignored at the desk for a good 30 minutes. Several front desk staff will appear from the back office, laugh and talk for several minutes while guests are lined up and standing there, waiting. A supervisor eventually helped me sort out our rooms and did a great job. One day a member of staff almost knocked my sister into his trash can as he wheeled it around. He simply kept walking without a word or even a change in expression. The persons affected by the resort credit asked me about using them. I advised them to check with the front desk to be sure they would be used correctly. They were advised the credits may be used at one of the shops in the lobby and at the spa. We had already had spa experiences at the other hotel we stayed so they opted to use the money in the shops. They pretty much bought things they didn't need to use up the credits as they won't return to Jamaica, and charged it to the room as advised. On the day of check-out they had an early flight to catch. Of course, staff present them with a bill and state the resort credit ***only applies to future stays*** I speak to another member of staff who stated that we would need to speak with a manager who arrives at 10am. I tell my friend to go catch her plane and I would speak with the manager. I spent 2.5 hours speaking with and waiting on the manager. He: tells me I emailed Miami and should have emailed Jamaica (I simply clicked the link to send an email as I do not reside in Jamaica); then insists several times that I tell him who the member of staff I spoke with is (Why would I record the person's name when they work at the front desk and are presumably the source of the information I need?) While I am waiting, several people also come to see the manager; they all tell me it is the worst hotel in Jamaica /the Caribbean they've ever stayed in and ask me for recommendations. Finally, the manager returns and starts admonishing me for the person not paying the bill, despite there being no manager before 10am and the persons needing to catch a flight etc. All the rooms were booked and paid for by me, so I can reasonably expect that I am able to resolve the issues. I am told that the accounts the funds are deposited, are too far away from each other and cannot talk to each other so there is no way the money can be transferred. I am told the resort funds are for rooms only and cannot be used as we were advised by hotel staff. The he asks for the name of the staff who gave us the wrong info because he would make them reimburse me. Seriously?? I think the staffs need to be better trained before they are punished for giving incorrect information. You can see a clear demarcation between staff who were just put there and staff who are well-trained. I was then told I could use the hotel credits for future stays at that hotel. I ;laughed out loud at that ludicrous suggestion as I am pretty sure if I was dumb enough to return to that hotel, I would be told yet another story about those credits and stuck with a bill at the end. In the end, I declined to continue being scolded like a child for the pitfalls of this hotel by the manager, thanked him for his time and left. When I went to the front desk - she told me the wrong amount that was owed, took the payment and then got quite the attitude, shaking her finger at me when I asked about the bill and why I wasn't given the correct amount in the first place. Please bear in mind, this is the person who went to check out my family earlier. I've emailed Bahia about the above and surprise, no response. Just know, they are cheap and have an F rating on the BBB for a reason.

The staff is really friendly but the service overall is poor. Checked in as "privileged" and was disappointed with the service. Requested a crib from check-in and up until now it wasnt delivered. No babysitting service after 5pm. No iron board in room. No personal map or info to use and do certain things in the room.

Not for me

We are staying in the adult only side of the hotel. We were here 6 years ago and it was fantastic. Well not anymore. The food is cold unless you go to the cooking stations. We went to the Takara restaurant tonight. Ordered a glass of red wine which was cold! We hadn’t finished our starters and they brought out the main course, which was tasteless. I watched them dish out the main course’s and they sat under a heated lamp for 10/15 minutes before anyone picked them up and they weren’t even cooked fresh, just taken out of a saucepan, a 10 year old could have done a better job.! Our shower door didn’t close, our patio door didn’t lock and no light on our balcony. The toilet lights in reception only stay on for 45 seconds then you have to waive your hands in the air to get them to come back on. (I have complained 3 time). First choice advertise that that there is waitress service around the pool (only if you can find someone). This hotel is for young adults and not for older couples. The music just bangs. The guests bend over around the pool and shake their bums to the people in the pool, which is encouraged by the entertainment team. I could carry on, but there is no point. Everything has gone downhill.
