Marvel at St Mark’s Cathedral

A tour of St Mark’s Cathedral provides expert insight into the creation of one of the most impressive pieces of religious architecture in Dalmatia. Discover the influential craftsmanship of stonemason Marko Andrijić. The belfry he created in the 1480s is thought to have provided the example for the dome on Šibenik Cathedral (Croatia’s most important renaissance building). Andrijić was also responsible for the altar, where you’ll find one of the cathedral’s two pieces by the painter Tintoretto.

It’s not all about art and architecture, either. There’s medieval weaponry, too, from the long-term battle to fend off any Ottoman invasion. There’s a strong association with the cathedral, as local history remembers how the locals prayed to the icon of the Virgin here during the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.
