Dance your socks off at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona, which has become one of Europe’s most popular music festivals. Held annually for one weekend in June, this exciting festival attracts thousands of music fans from all over Europe. Experience Sonar by Day, in Barcelona city centre, in addition to Sonar by Night, which happens just outside the city.
The first Sonar three day festival took place in 1994, and today you can enjoy a fusion of international music including established artists, dance, electronics and fresh new talent. Previous artists have included Estrella Damm, Major Lazer, Gorillaz and DJ Harvey. You can even experience exclusive and unpublished tracks from world famous artists. Sonar is spreading its wings, too, with concerts and showcases around the world. Sonar has travelled to New York, Stockholm, Reykjavik, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Toronto, Lisbon, Cape Town and many more cities worldwide.
More than a Music Festival…
Today the Sonar Festival is so much more than just a music festival. It’s developed to showcase a technology and record fair, art installations, video art projections, short films and lectures to appeal to all tastes.
What to eat
With over 20 culinary food trucks at Sonar by Day alone, you’ll be spoilt for choice with flavours from around the world featuring organic produce from Japan, Mexico, Peru, India and Spanish delicacies. Select from ecological foods, sweet and salty crepes, Italian porchetta and street food favourites.
How to get there
The Fira Montjuic of Barcelona is where Sonar by Day happens, in Placa d’Espana. You can take the Metro via the Green or Red line to Espanya Station, or get there via the “Hop on Hop Off” sightseeing bus. There are several public car parks available to use for the Sonar Festival if you’re driving. It’s also a great place for exploring some of Barcelona’s other highlights, as Fira Montjuic is close to the Museum Nacional Art de Catalunya and the Magic Fountain of Montjuic.
To get to Sonar by Night, which takes place at the Fira Gran Via Conference Centre just outside Barcelona, it’s either a 15-20 minute taxi ride or a 15 minute train ride to Europa/Fira from Espanya metro station. Bear in mind Sonar by Night goes on until 8am the next day, and trains will stop between 2am and 5am.
SonarCashless is the only method of payment in the festival. Guests charge their wristband at a cashless point (with cash or credit card) and then pay via the wristband at Sonar by Day and Sonar by Night. It is also possible to claim back any money not spent remaining on your bracelet while at the festival, or after.
Enjoy yourself and indulge in a bold, exciting and buzzing weekend of music underneath the Barcelona sunshine.
