Ideas for holidays with young children

It wasn’t until I went on holiday with an energetic toddler that I realised just how much my life has changed. Keeping young children happy on holiday isn’t always easy, and getting a chance to relax yourself is even harder. So, to help take the stress out of taking your own tots away, I’ve put my thinking cap on and collected together some of the best holiday ideas for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers, whatever you’re looking for.

For the warmest welcome

Great news if you fancy a city break: Rome loves babies and toddlers. In fact, you’ll find your little ones get a lot of smiles in lots of Italian hot spots, including the island of Sicily, where the beaches are perfect for under 5s.

Or maybe you’d prefer to go to Greece, where “Paidiá kalosírthate” might as well be a catchphrase. It means “Children welcome”, and they most definitely are. Top of the list for young families has to be Rhodes, where you can play together on beautiful sandy beaches, explore Butterfly Valley and visit the aquarium in Rhodes Town.

Even better, you don’t just have to stick to Italy or Greece for a warm vibe in the Med. They might be the top of my list, but your kids will be made very welcome just about everywhere; it’s such a family-friendly part of the world.

For the best beaches

Just imagine beautiful golden sands stretching as far as the eye can see… Okay, so I might be exaggerating a little but you get the picture; there’s a reason the Algarve is so good for family beach holidays. While your tots have fun getting covered in sand, take a deep breath of that fresh sea air and enjoy the scenery. My pick of the best family resorts in this part of Portugal has to be Albufeira, which has a grand total of seven beaches, atmospheric medieval streets to explore and plenty of restaurants serving up mouth-watering Portuguese dishes.

If you’ve got older kids as well, then you might prefer somewhere with exciting things to visit beyond the beaches, like big forts and ancient ruins. Check out Turkey or Croatia, where you’ll find lots of beaches that are perfect for families of all ages, with somewhere to get ice creams close at hand.

For everything in one place

If, like me, you’re thinking it would be amazing to have everything you want on your doorstep, then you’re going to love my final suggestion. Book a hotel that has something for everyone in your family, from the tiniest baby to the tallest teenager; and mum, dad, granny and granddad too.

We’ve got plenty of fantastic hotels that fit the bill, but top of my wish list for my next summer holiday has to be the Sunwing Cala Bona in Majorca. It’s got far too much going for it for me to mention everything here, but it seems to me that they’ve thought of everything: like a proper supermarket, excellent allergy labelling in the restaurants, takeaway food and even Happy Baby rooms.

For the kids, it’s not just the obvious things like face painting and fun games that caught my eye, it’s the more unusual details too. You can even encourage your little ones to give up their dummies to our very own Lollo & Bernie, if you want. Even better, Cala Bona’s very close to Cala Millor, which has one of the longest Blue Flag beaches on the island, so don’t forget the buckets and spades.

Plus, we’ve trained every member of staff at all of our Sunwing Family Resorts as a holiday rep, just to make sure you have a brilliant time.

Here you go, take a closer look at Sunwing Cala Bona; I think you’ll love it.
