Why choose Queen Mary 2?

There is no cruise line in the world that needs less of an introduction. This world-class world-famous fleet of ships have skilfully blended their heritage with the very latest modern facilities and created a brand that has come to define travelling in style and luxury. The Queen Mary 2 is Cunard's flagship. Its launch in 2002, replacing the iconic QE2, caused a stir around the world that ensures that today, this ocean going classic is still making waves.

Destinations and Itineraries

This ship and the Cunard line in particular have become synonymous with the transatlantic voyage between Southampton and New York. The Queen Mary 2 certainly upholds that tradition but offers plenty more in between. An immaculately timed itinerary at the beginning of July sets out from New York City on a tour of the east coast of the USA, arriving in Boston harbour on the fourth of July. After two days in the birthplace of the US revolution, the ship returns to New York where passengers can either disembark or cross the pond to arrive in Southampton six days later.

An epic cruise follows, taking up the best part of three weeks when the ship heads north to tour the Norwegian fjords, taking in the Scandinavian country's dramatic coastline and rugged natural beauty before heading west across the Atlantic and returning to New York. The ship continues to sail to and from New York until the middle of August, when it makes a brief six day excursion to Zeebrugge and St Peter Port in Guernsey.

The transatlantic crossings resume until the beginning of September when a tour of America's east coast offers the first glimpses of New England in the fall. Stops include the exclusive resort of Newport in Rhode Island, Boston, Bar Harbor in Maine, and up to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Quebec in Canada. The ship then returns to New York and onto Southampton to conclude this 28 day cruise.

The transatlantic cruises continue with diversions at either end of the Atlantic to Norway, or the east coast of the American continent, the only break being a quick trip to Hamburg in November.

Cruise ship and facilities

From its launch this ship has claimed the crown as the queen of all ocean liners and even today is the second largest cruise ship afloat. The Queen Mary 2 has an unrivalled pedigree and the ships interiors are as grand and elegant as its name demands.

There are 1,320 cabins on board and 995 of them have balconies, with an additional 60 benefitting from ocean views. All cabins are spacious and beautifully decorated. All have 24 hour room service, satellite TV, refrigerator, safe, hairdryer and telephone. All suites come with personalised stationery and a concierge service. Evoking the golden age of cruising, staterooms on the Queen Mary 2 are in different classes, which dictates which restaurant passengers can dine in.

The three main dining rooms are the Queen's Grill, the Princess Grill and the Britannia restaurant. Regardless of where passengers find themselves, the food and the service on board are excellent. Alternative dining options are available and take the form of the reservations-only restaurant Todd English and Kings Court, where passengers can grab a casual breakfast or a late night snack. Each evening it’s transformed into an Italian restaurant, a British style carvery, Asian cuisine or the chef's galley - rotating the theme each night.

Evening entertainment is provided in one of two show lounges, including the Royal Court Theatre, the Illuminations Planetarium and Cinema and the Queen's Room ballroom. G32 is the late night dance club and the Golden Lion pub offers karaoke. Live music is available in the Winter Garden and other lounges. Passengers can also try their luck in the on board casino or broaden their mind in the library.

Waistlines don't have to broaden during a cruise on board the Queen Mary 2 as there are extensive sports and fitness facilities on the ship. There are two swimming pools on deck and one inside. A gym, aerobics and yoga classes keep passengers trim and a 20,000sq ft spa includes a steam room, sauna, treatment rooms and a thalassotherapy spa. Elsewhere on the ship there is a golf simulator and shuffleboard.

With their distinctive black hulls, a cruise on a Cunard ship is a rare chance to take part in a tradition that spans more than a century. The only old fashioned aspects of the Queen Mary 2 however are the style and the service. Nothing can compare to entering port on this grand dame of the seas. Other ships may claim to be princesses but few can deny that this Queen rules the waves.

Onboard

Families are made very welcome onbaord the Queen Mary 2 and there’s a complete team of nannies on hand to entertain and look after your little ones. And there’s plenty of luxury features for adults to explore too. Book a blissful massage at the Canyon Ranch Spa, take a yoga class, attend an inspirational lecture, or savour afternoon tea served by classic white gloved stewards. Queen Mary 2 is designed to awaken, inspire and rejuvenate at every turn. By night she is alive with possibilities; enjoy an impromptu jazz recital, take in a show at the Royal Court Theatre or dance the night away at one of her swanky clubs. When you do cruise holidays onboard the QM2 she is as much a thrilling destination as any of the ports you will visit.

Staterooms

There are six categories of stateroom onboard the Queen Mary 2, ranging from full blown suites to more modest cabins. Every stateroom is luxuriously appointed and the QM2 boasts the best entry-level accommodation found on almost any cruise liner. Cabins start with an interior stateroom providing a compact ensuite, refrigerator, interactive TV, personal safe and hairdryer. The Queens Grill Suites Grand Duplex apartment is the very best the Queen Mary 2 has got to offer and includes a private bar, Xbox and priority access to all restaurants and lounges.

Dining

With its sparkling crystal and fine Wedgwood china the Queens Grill is without doubt the top table onboard the Queen Mary 2, with tables reserved for guests staying in the most luxurious suites. Elsewhere onboard there’s a seemingly endless parade of food and drink in the buffet, traditional British fare in the pub and al fresco snacks at the Boardwalk Café.
