What’s the weather like in Crete in January?
In January, the Greek island of Crete is in the middle of a cool, wet Mediterranean winter. At this time of year the island can be quite cloudy and cold, so if you prefer the hot weather and summer sunshine it’s worth delaying your Crete holidays until temperatures rise over the coming months. If you don’t mind the odd rain shower, January can be a good month to explore Crete.
At this time of year, Crete has a cold average temperature of just 11°C. With highs of 16°C it can be mild in the afternoons, but the evenings can get chilly with lows of 8°C. Although the Mediterranean Sea is a brisk 16°C in January, it will feel quite warm in comparison with the air outside. Just three hours of sunshine are expected each day, along with around 80mm of rain during the month. With half of the days in January bringing some showers, you’ll need to pack a light rain jacket.
