Blue cave of Biševo

Even the most jaded of travellers let out an audible ‘wow’ when entering the Blue Cave on Biševo, a speck of an island off the west coast of Vis. Accessible only by sea, usually by a morning boat excursion from Hvar or the nearest harbour at Komiža, the Blue Cave is a natural phenomenon that occurs but once a day in summer.

As the sun climbs towards high noon, its rays hit an undersea opening in the cave, whose walls and waters turns a sparkling azure. Many visitors react by diving in, while others admire and film from the boat.
