Possibly the best thing about a holiday in Elounda is the chance to slip into a slower pace of life. Stroll along the seafront, embrace the afternoon siesta and unwind in one of the café bars. There are also plenty of places to choose from for a leisurely meal, especially around the harbour and main square, and the fresh fish is a real highlight. In fact, several restaurants specialise in seafood, which won't be a surprise when you see the working harbour that's at the heart of life in Elounda. For an authentic local dining experience, find a table in a taverna and order a simple Greek salad, perhaps chased down by a glass of Ouzo. And for an authentic local shopping experience, browse one of Elounda's weekly markets. With everything from fresh fruit to local cheeses on the stalls, it's the perfect chance to pick up some Greek delicacies for a picnic lunch on the beach. There are lots of other lovely towns and villages on Crete too, so it's well worth hiring a car. Try Sissi or Piskopiano for an even quieter seaside life and visit Koutouloufari to explore a traditional Cretan village.
