What’s the weather like in Athens in December?
It’s one of the coldest months in the ancient city, but the winters in southern Greece are still very mild and pleasant. The Athens weather in December still produces a good share of Mediterranean sunshine, even though you can expect some showers.
Geographical influences
Athens is found on the south-east coast of Greece, close to the Saronic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. This region’s one of the sunniest and warmest in Europe. Short and sharp downpours can be expected sometimes, but the coastal breeze helps to move any clouds along.
Averages
Athens enjoys mild days throughout most of this winter month. The average high temperature’s a pleasant 15°C. On some colder days, this may fall below 10°C and you’ll need a coat. The sun will shine for up to four hours during December, which is great for mainland Europe, and doesn’t set until after 5pm. Keep an eye on the showers when you’re exploring this historic city. Along with January, December’s the wettest time in Athens and it gets 80mm of rain across an average of ten days. The sea’s surprisingly mild at 17°C, but it’s probably not a good idea to go swimming. The weather in Athens in December has low wind speed and UV levels.
