Golden Sun

Golden Sun is an all-inclusive hotel in Kalamaki, on the southern coast of the Greek island of Zante. The beach is just 150m away, where you'll find long stretches of sand, with views of mountainous scenery along the coastline. It is surrounded by the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, boasting acres of evergreen trees and nests of loggerhead sea turtles.

The whole family can join the lively food banquet at Giovanni Hall. Local and international specialities are served at buffets and barbeque parties overlooking the pool. After your evening meal, make your way outside for the entertainment, which includes traditional Greek dancing. During the day the poolside bar offers a range of tasty drinks and delicious snacks for guests of all ages.

The a la carte restaurant is reserved for adults, so you can enjoy a quiet romantic meal while the children are having fun elsewhere. Afterwards, maybe visit the cocktail bar where you can settle for a quiet drink or play a competitive game of billiards or darts. Grown-ups can also visit the spa, where you can swim in the heated pool, relax in the Jacuzzi or get refreshed in the Hammam. For a more personal touch book a treatment from the menu.

The air-conditioned rooms at Golden Sun offer WiFi, a TV, a minibar and a hairdryer. Singles, doubles and triples are all available, allowing groups of travellers to pick a combination of rooms that works for them. The Deluxe Family option includes a King sized bed and two single beds in a separate area, both feature a TV, an ideal choice for households who argue over who has control of the remote.

The centre of Kalamaki is around 1/2km away. Here you can try a traditional Greek baklava from one of the local pastry shops or browse for souvenirs. The children won’t want to miss the nearby fun park, where they can find enjoyment on waterslides or bounce around like Tigger on trampolines and bouncy castles.

The island of Zante has a rich cultural history, with plenty of attractions to explore such as museums, ancient ruins, monasteries and the picture-postcard Blue Caves. If you’re a spontaneous traveller and don’t want to make plans in advance, the hotel staff will be happy to assist with booking excursions after you arrive in Greece.

Standards have slipped

Sadly won’t be returning. This was our 6th visit to The Golden Sun but things have took a downward turn after good experiences on previous visits, unfortunately this will be our last. The rooms are of a good standard with walk in showers and a clean modern feel but the food and drink are where the hotel fails. The spirits are now undrinkable with awful sugary mixers served in very thin small plastic cups even in the evenings. Food was average and not to a good standard. Eating in the restaurant was a chore with cutbacks on staff leading to always waiting for cutlery and staff to clear tables. We had to ask for cutlery most evenings. Staff where friendly enough but the shining stars of our stay were Dimitra and Lehdi who serve at the pool bar during the day. I didn’t expect to eat at the hotel all the time as we like to go out every evening along the strip to sample the food and nightlife which Kalamaki has to offer but once or twice in a week I would ask for a decent meal but this was not to be. Maybe Covid has lead to cuts and standards slipping leading to the sourcing of cheaper drinks and food being purchased but this is detriment to guests experience. Already booked for next year to Kalamaki but another Hotel for us. A average 3* star hotel would be my rating.

Mixed feelings

Overall a great holiday here, travelled as a moderate sized group so had a variety of rooms, all varying in standard. Family room very modern with plenty of space for all, great air con and safe included. Others in the party not so great rooms, much smaller with failing air con, tiny bathroom..family room spotless and cleaned daily with clean bedding midweek. Restaurant not bad for a small hotel AI, usual salad bar and deserts, some variety of dishes throughout the week, waiting staff need a bit more get up go, cutlery etc nearly always had to be asked for. Food quality ok, you’d need to be very picky to not find something with what was on offer, pasta, fries, local dishes most days. The biggest bonus to this hotel are the pool staff, Dimitra and Lehdsi, always in the snack bar with a smile on their face, nothing ever too much for them, toasties, fries, ice cream, drinks, always served promptly and delicious snacks. Drinks as usual local labels so don’t expect to get wasted but the two of them made the day by the pool a delight. Pool area cleaned daily, enough beds during our stay, short stroll to the beach and 10 min walk to main strip. Overall a good holiday in a decent hotel, think they could tighten up a few things to make it better or company descriptions be a little more honest.

There are better hotels around

25 of us stayed here for a family wedding, 4 of us checked in first before the rest came. checkin was stressful, our flight had been delayed so it had been a long journey & we just wanted to go to our room for a shower. The porter would not give us our cases because he wanted to take them (obviously wanted a tip) in the end I just grabbed mine which a bit of a tussle as I was getting angry with him. The rooms are quite small and ours had the sink outside the bathroom which is unhygienic. The others rooms were worse than ours. Ours was cleaned every day apart from one. We noticed that there is a light out side the door that turns red when your in & green when your out. So this lets people know that the room is unoccupied which is a security issue. Some staff are rude and a couple are nice especially the snack bar lady. The hotel is located 2 minutes from the beach and a good walk from kalamaki strip. Laganas is 8-10 euros in a cab. Reception and the inside bar area are extremely hot so you need to sit outside under cover if you want to try and cool down. The glasses they give you to drink from are tiny and probaly the cheapest they could purchase as they are so flimsy. Food is ok with a decent selection (better than other hotels I’ve been to) but the restaurant does get very busy as it’s not very big. The airport is very close so there are planes taking off and landing all the time (not through the night) they do come very close but I didn’t find this a problem. As a family we had one major issue which was when a cleaner left cleaning solution in a gator aid bottle in a room, a nephew thought his mum and bought it and took a drink from it. This needed a hospital trip and was kept in overnight. Apart from a few mouth blisters this could of been a lot worse if he had swallowed it. We wanted a late checkout as our pick up was 6.30pm. 53 euros we were charged (extortionate) There are a lot more better hotels around so I don’t think I will be staying here again.
