Avoid at all costs!!!
This is the worst hotel I have ever experienced. I won't say stayed in as despite arriving at 2am, we couldn't bring ourselves to sleep in the room. On arrival the coach dropped us at what appeared to be a tavern/cafe that was closed. We found the reception down a dimly lit path and were greeted by a night porter who gave us the keys to our room. The reception was dated and the corridors were claustrophobic but we headed to our room to find it was a very basic room with very dated decor. The bathroom was covered in masking tape, the wardrobe was a piece of MDF fixed to a recess to give the impression of a wardrobe. The room was stifling although there was air conditioning for an additional €40 per week. There was no safe in the room but some dodgy looking boxes were available behind reception if we wanted to risk leaving our passport etc in there! After being in the room for a few minutes we observed that the bed was covered with ants and there were hairs all over the bed. We then looked furth and found items in the fridge and others shelves left by another occupant. There was also a pile of rubbish on the bedside table which included feminine products! At this stage my heart sunk and I returned to reception to explain to the night porter who grabbed 2 other keys and followed us back to the room. He apologised about the room and took us to another room saying he would arange for the first one to be cleaned the following day.. The second room pretty much mirrored the first room however the balcony door didn't open and despite brute force, the night porter couldn't open it. He then took us to a third room again of similar description however in this one the lights didn't work! We had no choice but to settle for the second room however after a sleepless night fighting off mosquitos, dealing with the heat and trying to sleep on matresses with springs protruding from them, we decided to go for a walk and look round the hotel. The pool area was enclosed by bushes and trees affording no views but this would have been acceptable if not for the sun beds strewn everywhere, leaves and debris floating in the pool, and general litter. I wasn't inspired to use these facilities as they were dirty. We then went to the breakfast area as we were staying half board. Breakfast consisted of boiled eggs, ham, cheese, bread and cornflakes. A juice machine dispensed warm orange squash. When I commented on this the lady in attendance gave me some ice. Not sure what the machine was supposed be doing but it certainly wasn't cooling the drink. When I asked if there was more breakfast I was told there would be at 8am. we returned at 8am and there was no bread left only a small amount of the other items. At 8.15 we were informed that the chef was late. We were also told that if we wanted anything else we had to pay for it!, I proceeded to take photos of the offerings and was shouted at by the lady in attendance. By now I had decided that there was no way I was going to spend any longer in the hotel than necessary. Fortunately I was able to arrange a transfer to another hotel which couldn't have been more different and was run by a family team who care about your every need And cost far less than the Gondola. PLEASE AVOID THIS HOTEL AT ALL COSTS AS IT WILL RUINE YOUR HOLIDAWY.
Good pool and quiet
I spent 7 nights in Hotel Gondola in September. I chose this hotel mainly for 3 reasons: it was cheap, seemed to have a good pool and was quiet. I wanted a hotel that’s near Faliraki (easier to head to Rhodes and Lindos) but not in Faliraki as I planned to just have a nice sunny week off, no alcohol, no all-night-parties. As I had read the reviews I didn’t have any high hopes so I was pleasantly surprised. Overall I liked the stay but I guess there was a lot to do with luck – I just had a good room. Hotel is located on Apollonos Street: 1,5 km to Faliraki centre, 1,1 km to nearest bus stop (to Rhodes/Lindos/Anthony Quinn Bay etc), 180 m to Kathara beach, 30 m from the nearest shop, some nice tavernas-restaurants nearby. It is easy to find and it’s quiet, no drunk on noisy people around. Hotel has 62 rooms, most of them with AC. Rooms are located on two floors: ground floor (room numbers starting with 2) and upstairs 1st floor (starting with 3). The best rooms are on the 1st floor and have odd numbers (319, 321, 323, 325, 327, 329) – these have a morning sun, a view to quiet beach road and are more private. Rooms with even numbers face inner garden, restaurant and a path to the pool and are not very private. Room 330 looked to be en face the pool and may be noisy because of the loud dance music during day time. Ground floor rooms looked to me like dungeons – no view, balcony on the street level and people always passing by. As you see it depends a lot on the location of the room, the quality of the rooms is very different. Our room (no. 323) was on the 1st floor and was private, had a good view and was quiet. The room had a wardrobe and a fridge. Balcony was roomy and had a plastic table and two chairs. The windows were ground-to-ceiling that made room look much open. Bathroom was tiny, showering was funny as there was no shower area or shower curtain, only hipbath (small bath that has two levels) so we had to do some acrobatics on wet surfaces. Not that funny if you are older, I guess. Toilet whistled like a train and time to time you could hear other toilets as well. :) Nothing to say about water temperatures, it was always warm. Overall look of the room was worn-out, the furniture needs badly some renovation. We had B&B package. Breakfast time is 7-10 o‘clock. For breakfast the hotel serves the same day after day: orange juice, coffee, tea, milk, Greek yoghurt, two jams and honey, tomato, ham, cheese, boiled eggs, butter and bread. When something ended they reacted to it quite quickly. I’d recommend to cheer the breakfast up with olives or smth, they didn’t make a problem about it. We didn’t eat dinners at the hotel but as far as I saw it’s not buffet style. At the same time they serve à la carte dinners too, separately as well as a combo (salad for starter + main course + dessert for 8,50-9,50 €). We dined once in the pool bar and had a great Greek food: good gemista and fresh fish, main courses only for 6-10 €. View was better than in the restaurant and Greek music is played at dinner time. The pool is the gem of this hotel. Getting to the pool you have to walk about 30 m through nice greenery and the area is surrounded by trees, bushes and flowers. There’s plenty of free loungers to use and shades to hide. Next to the pool is a shower as well. Pool bar is just next to the pool and serves cheap snacks and drinks. Pool itself is quite big (20-25 m), clean and you can use it also during dinner time till the bar is open. During daytime the music is usual European dance music but night time traditional Greek music. About AC and WiFi. AC in not included, you have to pay 7 €/day or 40 €/week and you probably will pay for it because the weather is hot during the season, even in September. WiFi is password protected but it works only near the reception. There’s a PC to use as well. Connection to other cities. Hotel has no bus stops nearby. The nearest bus stop to head to south or Rhodes is near Faliraki (on Rhodes-Lindos road, near the church, about 1,1 km walk from the hotel). If you have to be in Rhodes early you have to head to Faliraki bus stop (next to McDonald’s, about 1,4 km from the hotel). During night time the Rhodes-Faliraki buses stop at Faliraki stop only. Bus stops have timetables and destinations. The hotel personnel was also nice. Some of them didn’t speak English well but we had all our problems solved and questions answered.
