This family-friendly resort is situated in southern Kefalonia, close to Avithos beach. This is a lovely, fertile region where olive trees and citrus orchards abound. The coastline faces the tiny island of Dias and offers magnificent views to the island of Zakynthos across the channel. The resort's location makes an ideal setting for a peaceful and tranquil holiday. The nearby village of Svoronata is never crowded with tourists so there are no intrusive noises or sights to hamper your relaxation and private time. The resort is a perfect place for a holiday and an ideal base for exploring the island. The nearby villages of Kaligata, Kourkoumelata and Metaxata are charming local villages each with its own character and history. Guests will find restaurants within 200 metres of the accommodation, whilst shops are 1 km away. The beach resort of Lassi and the capital of Argostoli are 8 and 10 km away respectively. The airport is 3 km away and the transfer takes approximately 20 minutes. This air-conditioned resort is a brand new complex, which has been built in the traditional Kefalonian style and is set in spacious gardens. The living quarters are well designed and decorated, combining elegance and comfort and have all the amenities for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Frustration and disappointment with the new ownership of the Avithos Beach Estate
I've thought long and hard about whether to write this review as I tend to prefer sharing feedback with companies directly, especially when it is less than positive, but having tried a number of times to discuss this with the new owner of the Avithos Beach Estate with no luck, I've decided its only fair to share on here. Following the long list of positive reviews for the resort, we booked a trip for 2020 with Simpsons. We all know what happened - Covid struck, our flights were cancelled, and so I wanted to postpone the trip by a year. It became apparent in October that Simpsons were no longer going to represent the hotel. They didn't let me know although it disappeared from their website and I eventually managed to get them to admit the negotiations had come to nothing and they were no longer involved. I therefore eventually received a refund for my deposit but the hotel looked so lovely I wanted to book it directly. After numerous attempts I managed to get a response from the owner and gave her my credit card details for a booking in 2021. Scroll forward a year to June 2021, a month from our impending trip. I reached out to the Avithos to confirm they were expecting us. No response. I emailed again. No response. And again. No response. There is no phone number on their website. So I contacted them via Instagram. Eventually someone responded and said they would pass the message on to the owner. No response. I then chased on many subsequent days with increasing frustration - even calling the phone number listed on TripAdvisor. The phone was answered but they denied being anything to do with the Avithos Estate (I'm not sure about this). Eventually I received a one line email from the owner saying they would not be opening this year and were spending the Summer making repairs to damage caused by the hurricane - which was 10 months ago. My issue is not that they decided not to open, rather the completely unacceptable lack of communication with a paying customer. Not only did they not reach out proactively to tell me (would they ever have done??) but they completely ignored numerous emails and social media prompts when all I wanted to know was whether I'd have to make alternative arrangements. The hotel looked like everything we wanted, and I was really gutted that we won't be able to stay there, but it's clear to me that even if it had been open, the reviews below do not reflect the current situation at the Avithos. The effusive mentions of help from the team running it are unlikely to be the experience the new owners are offering unless they have a complete turnaround next year. We like to support small, local businesses but I've had a terrible experience with the Avithos, wasting hours desperately trying to establish if a booked holiday is going ahead - stress I could have done without given everything else involved in travel these days. I of course understand about staffing issues caused by Covid, I'm so sorry to hear about the hurricane but to simply not respond to a customer just isn't acceptable in any circumstances and its for that reason I decided to share my recent experience.
Beautifully quiet and relaxed
Sadly we only had a week here, but it was lovely. Like most guests, we developed a routine of spending some time by the pool and some time exploring this lovely island in the car. Karen and John, the managers, are excellent hosts and Karen spends a lot of time checking what people's plans are at breakfast (nicely-done buffet with something different in the hot cabinet each morning) and advising them, drawing maps, making phone calls to book restaurants etc.. The local beach is sandy and long, with pay-for loungers & parasols near the beach bar. There is an on-going turtle watch programme and we were lucky enough to see baby turtles hatching and making their way to the sea, with no sign of David Attenborough-style predators pouncing on them. The 2 local tavernas are good and friendly, busy at weekends with locals. By far the best food we had was at The Olive Lounge up beside the castle, superb and great views. Karen will draw you a map! We did though have a memorable lunch at a little fish restaurant by the harbour just off the road to Assos, at Ag Kyriakis beach, Zola. Simple grilled fish, chips and Greek salad overlooking the small harbour a few hundred metres along from a quiet beach with 2 sets of loungers & parasols (half the price of the local ones) & 2 excellent small beach bars. Magic. The accommodation which makes up the Avithos Beach Estate is a set of adjoining suites, mostly with a small terrace and sea views. Guests get to know each other and chat - it's interesting how groups "bond" after a day or two though I guess some weeks work better than others from that point of view. We were lucky. We were in one of the 2 larger and separate suites slightly separated from the main complex, Tramoundana. Much too big for just the 2 of us but we were told when booking that the beds in the smaller bedrooms in the main block would be too narrow for an adult with restless legs. Not true! Tramoundana and the suite underneath it are well-equipped but have no outlook except on a few olive trees, and it's a slight hike back to the main block, bar area etc.. We've already taken this up with Simpsons, who have been helpful.
Third visit!
I love this hotel. Each room/ appartment has its own bedroom, bathroom, living area and basic kitchen area (the larger appartments have ovens) and balcony so you can be quite self contained if you wish. The grounds are beautiful -especially in June when the bougainvillea is flowering. The pool is well kept and there is a short walk from the hotel, past two tavernas open from breakfast till late at night and a beach bar serving beer, soft drinks, cocktails, snacks, salads and sandwiches onto my favourite beach (so far) on Kefalonia. Twenty monutes walk away there is the friendliest, best stocked mini market you can imagine. Twenty minutes in the car and you are in Argostoli, the island's capital. Ten minutes in the car and you are at the airport-and yet we were never disturbed by the noise of planes. So far, so perfect. But what really makes this place are the managers, Karen and John, who go out of their way to make your stay just what you want it to be. They will recommend beaches, walks, restaurants, drives. They will book taxis, restaurants, scuba diving, boat trips. They might even give you a lift to the bus stop if you need it. Karen bakes cakes in her afternoons at home and brings them in for the guests. Once a week John cooks up a choice of dishes so guests can eat at the hotel and take part in a quiz night if they want to meet some of the other guests. If that's not for you, there is no pressure to join in. I have been here three times now with husband and both grown up children and their friends. We all love it and never want to leave.
