Average holiday, more bounjour than Kalimera
So we visited in 2015, but I didn't leave a review! Maybe things have changed since then so don't just go by my review. We stayed in a sort of cave room, it was big, and comfy enough but very dark! and dated. The food was nice, I really enjoyed everything we ate. The drinks were ok, the usual all inclusive. We enjoyed a glass of wine before dinner sitting out on the terrace looking at the sea. The bar staff were miserable as sin. Now, the animation team, they were something else. Screaming and shouting, in French, and trying to force people up to dance, I love dancing but my husband doesn't! One of the animation team girls kept trying to get him up dancing, but when I said good luck as he won't even dance with me she said "but he might want to dance with me". Needless to say he didn't! (I wouldn't have minded if he did, I'd have been surprised but not upset at all. ) She then got me in the conga and said "oh you brits love the conga don't you". Quite off putting really. 0ne night they had a comedy show, even though it was in French it made us laugh. Karaoke was all French. Anyway, would I go back? The area is nice, and we liked the small beach even if it was pebbly, nice tavernas nearby. We liked the food. Probably wouldn't return, but who knows, I am forgiving.
Average at best...
We visited the Peninsula as an autumn break for some sunshine . We checked in late at night and were pleased to hear that there was food left out for us (as several flights were checking in late that night). The guy who checked us in welcomed my husband warmly, calling him "My Prince " I know that Greece/Crete is a bit of a patriarchal society, but it was a bit pathetic that I was completely ignored (even though I joked with the guy that I was a guest too...) The room was very basic (sea view suite) although it did have a lovely view and a comfy bed and the air conditioning worked well. There were very limited toiletries in the bathroom consisting of shampoo, soap and conditioner. No body lotion so bring your own. There was none in the hotel shop and it's expensive in the beach store. After having a bath, the bathroom flooded every day up through the overflow drain on the floor. We reported this to reception three days in a row but they weren't that concerned and blamed us for putting loo roll down the toilet (which we weren't). Loo roll goes in a bin beside the toilet which is customary but gross! We were in a neighbouring hotel previously which didn't have this problem. We gave up reporting the problem. The restaurant is like a school canteen, being big and noisy with no atmosphere. It's definitely not romantic! You have to set your own table and we were shocked to see guests clearing their own tables too (which we eventually did too). The staff in the restaurant work really hard, but there aren't enough staff to cope with the volume of guests. At times it was difficult to get a table, cutlery, cups, glasses etc. The hot food is generally cold and poorly labelled so you're unsure what you're eating. Having a seafood/fish allergy, I never knew what I could and couldn't eat. For families with children, there seems to be a good choice of kiddie food - pizza at every meal etc, but we were generally disappointed with the food. Some dishes were delicious but cold. There is a microwave in the restaurant but we didn't expect to have to heat up our dinner! As said by other guests, the entertainment caters mainly for the French guests. The dance show and the Greek night are very good, but don't expect the other entertainment nights to communicate in any language other than French. The all inclusive package is a bit of a joke. You only get all inclusive drinks at the pool bar. You have to pay for the same drinks in the lobby bar and down at the pier. The all inclusive cocktails weren't to our taste. The ouzo was better! We were in the hotel for over a week and were expected to use the same beach towels daily! You have to pay to change your towels. The redeeming features of the hotel are the views, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the weather and the helpfulness of the staff (apart from check in guy). Sadly, we won't be back.
A perfect vacation at Peninsula
We stayed at Peninsula as a group of 6 families with children and adolescents. The place is beautiful, overlooking the sea from every angle. The staff was very friendly, attending to all our questions and needs. The place offers ample activities for all age groups - tennis courts, beaches, swimming pools, table tennis and more. In the immediate vicinity, you can rent boats, SUPs and ski jets. The food was plentiful and very good, and the rooms were clean. We will be looking forward to coming back.
