Chillax time!
I found this hotel's location to be an ideal place for a contemplative solo holiday – it's just a pity that they have no single rooms, so I had to pay almost double what most other people would have paid. It was also just as well that I wasn't looking for company, as very few Brits there, the majority of people being German, I think. All the hotel's staff are so hard working, keeping the place very clean, and the tables in the dining rooms cleared, and any problems quickly resolved. The food was nice enough, but I have to say that the dining experience was not that great, with queues for drinks, soups, and main courses causing regular frustration. There were always 2 soups on offer, but one queue. Once at the head of the queue, most people would choose the clear soup, and faff about adding rice, peas, sweetcorn and herbs to their bowls. Everyone would be waiting in line, even if they wanted the thick soup, as they didn't want to be accused of jumping the queue. It would have been better to have clear signage above the soups, and 2 separate queues. At the end of 2 weeks of this, I was glad to get back to my microwave meals for one! The 2 adjoining islands are very peaceful, and it's easy to find a suitable spot on the rocks or one of the small beaches for sunbathing and swimming. Snorkeling is also pretty good, as quite a few different fish to see. Sometimes the jellyfish were a bit of a nuisance; apparently they can sting but are not harmful. I swam through swarms of them – they are only a few inches in diameter – but never felt any stings. There is plenty to do during the day – tennis courts, bicycle hire, kayak and paddle board hire, in and outdoor pools, sauna, massage, etc., but evenings were pretty dull. The last evening entertainment was on 4th October. There were also no excursions available from either Tui or the hotel, due to it being end of season. The hourly boat to Rovinj is great, always on time, and a lovely trip, sometimes with dolphins visible. Rovinj itself is pretty as a postcard, and lots of places to eat and artisan shops to browse. (Be warned though that these too were starting to close around 15th October.) I recommend climbing the bell tower at the Church of St. Euphemia, although not for the faint hearted or those with mobility issues. There are about 190 rickety old wooden steps to negotiate, but well worth it for the great views when you get to the top. Golden Cape Forest Park is also well worth a visit and just a pleasant 15-20 minute walk from where the boat drops you at the Delfin pier. Bikes can be hired in Rovinj if you prefer to cycle to the park. There is a bus station in Rovinj for those wanting to travel further afield, such as Porec or Pula. Oh, and the weather was great! Had expected at least some rain in October, but nearly every day was sunny and about 22'C – what's not to love?!
Good but not Great
The island itself is quite beautiful, with scenic walks and old buildings. You must get a ferry from Rovinj old town, which takes 15 mins and runs once an hour. Its a unique experience but means you have to plan ahead re: excursions, eating out, etc. We had breakfast and dinner included - the service was a little manic but there was a good selection (though my partner is vegetarian and lacked options). Our room was a little dated. The bed was speaky, the TV only had 1 English Channel (BBC News) and there were no tea making facilities. I had to sleep with earplugs as you can clearly hear other rooms above you and doors slamming in the corridor. There was also no A/C (the hotel informed me you can only turn the temp up, not down from Sept onwards which is bizarre). The staff are friendly and there are plenty of lovely spots to sit and have a drink. The prices are a little expensive as once you're on the island, they have a monopoly. We were promised nightly entertainment but only had some on one night. The beaches are rocky and often swamped with (allegedly harmless) jellyfish. There are outdoor pools but they are freezing. The indoor spa and gym are great however, and are included with your stay. Overall it was a good experience, but feels like it need a refresh to become a truly memorable place to stay.
Lovely location, a couple of improvements needed but very good overall.
Location is beautiful - a boat ride from the main town but boats run every hour from 6am until midnight. The outside areas of the hotel are lovely - lots of sunloungers around the pools, by the sea and in the gardens so no sunbed rush at any time of day. A couple of extra options to pay to eat lunch at (we were half board) including a lovely italian bistro. Staff were all friendly and attentive and we were impressed by how many staff appeared not only to be able to speak English to a great standard but also German. There is also a small island attached via a walkway which is a pleasant walk around (I understand there is a nudist area on the far side of this island so something to be aware of depending on your personal preferences). No real issues whilst we were there. We stayed in room 283 (quoted as ‘inland view’ when booking) it did have some sea/trees view towards the front of the hotel however was situated over a walkway with the entrance to the spa underneath. Not a great issue but I would advise paying for a sea view room. The rooms are absolutely fine - maybe a little basic for a 4* and not very big but everything you need and very clean - rooms were freshened up daily including clean towels. The air con wasn’t great but the room was comfortable and the bathrooms need updating as are pink tiled with some wear and tear. The shower cubicles are also very small - not an issue for us as two fairly average sized adults but may be an issue if you are on the taller or larger side. Minimal time spent in the bathroom so it didn’t affect our stay massively but I think the hotel do need to look at updating to bring everything up to the same standard. Meals were good, we particularly found the local wine and beer on tap for the evening meal was good however meal times can be VERY busy (it’s a big hotel) and can feel a little cattle-market like. Personally, we would opt for bed and breakfast if staying here again although if you are a seasoned buffet meal goer I can’t see that you would have any issues here, just a matter of personal preference. At both breakfast and the evening meal, there was a very good selection and food was plentiful. Overall, a well oiled machine especially given the size of the place.
