Thoroughly enjoyable visit!
This hotel is positioned in a beautiful shelted cove with a soft sandy beach. It has a fantastic scenic view of the main land and it's stunning landform. The Beach is regularly decended upon by day trips to the island and the locals, some of who'm are children. So you will need to decide if that's a deal breaker for you - for us it wasn't a problem, in our experience they were all very polite and considerate. It's clean and has a soft sandy sea bed with a gradual depth change, suitable for anyone not confident in swimming to cool off. The room was nice and clean and cooled with a good air con system. The fridge stock wasn't great, 2 bottles of still and sparkling water, no light snacks. Coming and going from the rooms to the hotel amenities provides a fair workout. Villa 8 overlooking the bay will give you the best overall view from your room. The staff are second to none and the work ethic here is fantastic, no name dropping here they all go above and beyond and make a fantastic team. A couple more bar staff and waiters at peak times is required, both the staff and the tables available get very stretched so a good level of patience is needed. I enjoyed the food , selection was adequate, cooked well and tasted great. The drinks can be hit and miss at times, a few more mocktails alongside some 0% alcohol beverages would be welcome addition. Branded drinks like bacardi, captains etc are all at an extra cost. The only real disappointment for me was the watersports activities, they're not included and are run by a third party on the beach - £56.26 for a kayak for 3 hours. An hour of paddleboarding or kayaking a day would be a nice gesture. Make sure to bring your own snorkeling equipment, you can't rent it here. The best snorkeling is near the nudest beach just along from villa rose but the bay is also full of life. Access to Dubrovnik - as painful as it is especially on holiday. The 6:40am/6:45am ship to dubrovnik is a must, beat those crowds and temperatures! It will give you a much better overall experience. We've really enjoyed our stay on Kolocep at Kalamota Island. I would defintely consider staying again. There are a few small issues which I'm sure will be addressed now that everything is slowly returning to normal after covid. Our thanks to all the staff who've made our holiday an enjoyable one!
Don’t do it
I came across this hotel on TUI and thought wow this looks amazing and then realised that I had been here last year. I wouldn’t be fooled by the photos, the island is beautiful however the hotel is not worth the money. The buffet food had flies all over it, I was frustrated by this at one point and asked if I could have some dessert without flies on and the waiter said it was hard for there not to be flies on the food which was concerning. We went hungry most nights with not a lot we could do with it being a remote island, even the restaurant close by was TUI blue and just as bad but more edible. The hot food is kept under metal trays but we didn’t have 1 meal which we enjoyed. The cocktails really weren’t nice either, they were mostly warm and cheap tasting alcohol was used so you couldn’t even fill up on drinks. I would say the island is nice to visit on a day trip but I certainly wouldn’t waste my money again, not sure who wrote the good reviews, don’t be fooled.
A second visit and a huge disappointment this time.
We returned here after first visiting in September 2019 when this hotel was a sensimar. Unfortunately after now becoming a Tui Blu , it was not of the same quality at all. The good was the Island is still as beautiful and the desserts and bread selection were excellent but unfortunately that was where the good ends. Such a massive shame and it truly was a downgrade. The housekeeping was terrible we put our towels on the floor in bedroom twice during our stay of 10 days because they hadn't been changed at all. This was ignored and the towels were still there when we returned to the room late in the afternoon. We rang reception and they very kindly brought us some clean ones, this should not have been necessary. The sheets were changed eventually when again we had to ask for this to be done. The food was not of the same quality it had been and was generally cold. The villa rose restaurant that was included in 2019 was no longer available for us to use at all as this was now a wedding venue only. The cullinarium that had been so good in 2019 with a menu with a huge choice was sadly no longer the same with a choice of three dishes for each course only now. The wine is now diabolical with it being served in jugs so imagine this was out of barrels or boxes and it was awful. The drinks which had choices of gin etc in 2019 now doesn't and unfortunately my wife has migraine with gordons so was unable to drink it. The mixers were awful too off a tap no longer in bottles so they were disgusting too. We went on a long day trip and then had to wait at the port for 3 hours to get the regular ferry to get back to the island . Because for some reason the transport we should have had was not available for us all. The Tui manager was awful so full of his own importance but didn't care at all about the guests. However the other Tui reps were very good. We would not ever return again and feel Tui really need to get there act together as regards this hotel. It was a really excellent hotel and unfortunately as beautiful as the Island is It is no longer somewhere we would want to visit again. Would suggest they put a proper manager in place to run the hotel rather than allowing a Tui manager who really doesn't understand hospitality at all to run it. Conclusion very dissatisfied. We recommended this hotel to friends who came with us this time and frankly it was embarrassing.
