5 Things to do in Edinburgh

Holidays in Edinburgh are always a superb choice. Voted the fourth most beautiful city in the world, with Edinburgh castle looking down over its historic streets, it rightly gained UNESCO status in 1966. Wherever you turn, you are met with breathtaking architecture. The New Town is lined with neo-classical Georgian blocks, neat, ordered, and towering above the narrow alleyways. Follow the marble Scotsman steps, connecting to the Old Town, and you’ll stumble upon a contrast of mediaeval characteristics.

With its compact cityscape and pedestrian-friendly walkways, you can explore Edinburgh's attractions on foot, making it an ideal spot for a weekend break or short staycation. One of our favourite attractions in Edinburgh is the Gin Distillery Tour. You'll get to sample plenty of tastings along the way and make your very own custom miniature to take home with you!

The capital also houses a wonderful collection of artworks from Monet to Van Gogh in the Scottish National Gallery, situated in the heart of the city.

If you want to make the most of that intoxicatingly fresh Scottish air, make the ascent to Arthur's Seat. This ancient volcano has several routes to its summit of varying degrees of difficulty, leading to 360 views over the city.

To soak up some of this capital's fascinating heritage, plan your trip around August, and you'll get to see the inspirational spectacle that is Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The brilliant show spans over three weeks, combining music, dance and Scottish spirit.
