A strong 4/5 and we would return
Just returned from our holiday, we had a great time but I just can’t give five stars because of the few points listed below 1. Food it isn’t warm (temporary restaurant so hopefully this will improve, but if you’re coming in the next 2 weeks just be aware) or plentiful. Meat is very fatty and the fish is bony. 2. The kids club just doesn’t seem to be operating at all? June 22. This was one of the reasons we picked the hotel so we were disappointed 3. At 8am one morning, we were all sleeping in darkness.. and someone just… entered the room using a key card. Stood there for 10 seconds and then left. Absolutely terrifying for me, never mind the kids! The grounds are lovely, the junior suites are really well appointed with lots of storage. The staff are friendly and the transfer from the airport isn’t too long. Really kid friendly pools and no lounger wars! The positives about the food: we liked the cheese selection and the desserts. The kids enjoyed the pasta options Beach people- there are no local beaches with sun loungers FYI. Local Beaches are rocky. Taxi to Corralejo is about 3-4 euros but the beach is more sandy. I almost wish we could have gone b&b at this hotel as we ended up eating out twice; so we wasted the all inclusive. We would like to return when the restaurant has been revamped and the kids club is operational Vanessa at Reception very helpful, thank you.
Some good points but not 4 star quality.
Lots of plusses like plentiful sun loungers, lot's of pools, clean, quiet location, sleep quality, impressive entrance and foyer, entertainment fine, good security - but some big negatives. Got there late after delayed flight and was handed keys to 3113. The receptionist was very helpful and gave us a couple of picnic bags which was a nice thought. The quality of the sandwiches should have been a warning of what was to come. Room 3113 was a spacious junior suite with a big bed. However, the Ac didn't work and it was hotter inside the room than outside at night. It was in a very poor decorative state. The furniture in this room had been hammered. Thought we'll have breakfast in the morning and ask for a move. After breakfast in the Kentia pool restaurant I was thinking we had made a big mistake coming here. The Kentia is just one big free for all, total chaos. How can anybody enjoy a dining experience like that?! You feared that if you left your seat somebody would jump instantly in it, The worst part of the breakfast was the lukewarm uninspiring food and machine fruit juices. All of them were like concentrated sugar slosh - no juice in whatsoever. Same goes for the poolside machine cocktails. One Pina Colada was enough to say no thanks, wont be having any more of those. The water machine at our closest pool didn't dispense cold water either. The breakfast smoothies were freshly made and were way better than the machine 'juices'. The hotel management may claim that it's better sustainability (less waste etc) but you can't have quality this poor in a 4 star hotel. Two things happened that saved this holiday - but only just. Inma on reception moved us to 2202. She was fantastic - as were the majority of the staff - and even encouraged my Spanglish. 2202 was much better decoratively and the Ac worked fine. Second, we discovered the Plaza. When I say discovered I really mean that. Why can't the hotel put some basic info about the complex in the hotel rooms? Everything is either a QR code or you have to ask constantly. We talked to another guest poolside who didn't even know the Plaza existed yet it was less than 75 metres away! The hotel management needs to be more proactive and promote it's plus points rather than have guests feeling uncomfortable for constantly badgering the excellent reception staff. The eating experience at the Plaza was like you were in a different hotel to the Kentia - although there was far less choice and no themed nights. The dining experience was calmer, civilised and had a classy 4 star feel to it. The food here was hit and miss though. First of all it needed to be hotter. On our last day we got to the plaza at 8am sharp. How can the food be just warm when it's just been cooked? One of the other food complainants (there was a few of them!) said to the TUI rep said they were moving food between restaurants, and you have to wonder if this is the case. Some things were great - the salad bar, cod was tasty, and the diced beef in gravy was delicious. But overall I thought it lacked quality, creativity and imagination. I can give a few examples for the benefit of the hotel management: The lamb tagine sauce was amazing. Did it have any meat on it? No, had a plate full of bones and fat, Tried two varieties of Paella and both were disappointing. One was just brown rice and unshelled prawns. Could you not shell them before to stop my hands getting messy? I've had paella in other 4 star Spanish hotels where they've made it a real feast and thrown the lot in - chicken, calamares, prawns, chorizo, veggies - delicious. Not the same here. Being completely fair though, you will always find something to eat here even for the most fussy Brit abroad. Sadly can't recommend this hotel at all and won't be returning. Discussed my thoughts with one of the reception girls who said that changes are on the horizon - especially with the dining. And we did see lot's of evidence of maintenance and cleaning. But I was hoping for a top end 4 star classy experience and left disappointed. This hotel just lacks quality. In hindsight, wish I would have paid a bit more and stayed atTres Islas on that gorgeous coastline. There's no free hotel bus out to the dunes from Alua and the nearest beach is too rocky to swim.
Another fabulous holiday
This is our 4th stay in 10 years, and we are coming to the end of another fabulous stay. The hotel and grounds are kept immaculate. All the hotel staff we came across were always smiling and happy to help, even during busy times in the restaurants. This has not changed over the years, despite a change in ownership. The food is plentiful and fresh. It can be repetitive, but there is plenty of choice. Our only negative is the spa and gym area. This needs some attention. The gym equipment is old and a bit rickety. The same equipment was in use 10yrs ago and there is no working AC in the gym area, only doors that open onto the terrace. Unfortunately the staff in the spa do not appear to share the same level of customer service, and at times come across hostile. Again this has always seemed to be the case, and is a shame as it’s a stark contrast to the hotel staff. Especially if you try to exchange your sun bed towel outside of the restrictive towel change window (9-11am, 4-6pm). Otherwise, a lovely hotel and grounds with hotel staff who can’t do enough for you. We will be returning next year!
