I am sad to write this review. We have family and friends on Barbados. We have stayed at the Crane previously - and it was fabulous (10-15 years ago). We were looking forward to this post-COVID travel ban vacation. I also do not like to spend my time on vacation having to complain. It simply should not be necessary. The Crane remains a physically beautiful location. It is historic. The facilities are beautiful. The Crane is resting on its reputation. Period. Save for a few exceptions (a great housekeeper and one polite, friendly, professional waitress and check-in staff and valet on Day one), the staff we encountered seemed unhappy. We experienced service that ranged from disinterested to rude. And this was in the face of unrelenting politeness. Food and beverage at the Crane gets a 4 out of 10. This is an expensive resort. The food quite simply does not measure up, nor does the service. The breakfast (that we had pre-paid for - and is apparently worth $75 CAD per couple) was so mediocre, that we purchased food at a local convenience grocery and prepared our own breakfasts. After a couple of dinners at the Crane, we ate offsite - and had far superior food at better prices (a FANTASTIC restaurant nearby is 'Dis Ole House', and a great lunch spot - also nearby - is 'Cutters', and a new one - soon to open looks like it will be great is 'Le Shack' - also very close by). We had a beautiful ground floor suite with its own pool - this was, hands-down, the best part of our vacation. We spent a lot of time by our pool. The beach at the Crane was unusable - more about this below. We did however not have air conditioning in our bedroom. This was reported to staff on day one and NEVER addressed for the duration of the visit. A staff member called us on the eve of our departure to ask if our air conditioning was working (it was working in half the suite). I reported that the bedroom AC had not been addressed. Her response was - "but are you ok?" - to which I replied: "what does that mean? Yes we're ok, but the air conditioning still isn't working." Sadly, the Crane Beach - which has been rated as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, has been besieged by Sargassum moss (a form of seaweed) that is relentlessly washing ashore on the east coast of Barbados. The Crane beach is nowhere to be seen. The moss is several feet thick. The waters off the beach are un-swimmable for the same reason. Now, this NOT the fault of the Crane resort, but there was little effort to mitigate the situation and no alternatives offered. Neither was there any notification of the magnitude of this problem pre-trip of this known situation (should have checked Trip Advisor!). I understand that now, the Crane is offering shuttles to offsite beaches on the west coast (where the moss is not as problematic) for guests. As I said, the Crane is a beautiful, historic resort. It has wonderful potential. It seems to be riding on its reputation alone currently. It needs to get its act together. If it is going to charge world-class rates, and hold itself out to be a world-class resort, the food, beverage, service, attention to guest experience, attention to facilities problems/issues need to be commensurate with this representation. People have many choices in spending their discretionary income. For us, we will be spending our travel dollars elsewhere. Experiences in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Morocco, Japan far outstrip what we experienced here.

Will not be returning.

This hotel had so much potential but after frequenting many hotels in the Caribbean, this might have been one of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed at and for the price that is disappointing. I have stayed at cheaper inclusive resorts with way better service. Pros: -The suite booked was amazing with a fully stocked kitchen and beautiful views of the ocean. -The food and service in restaurants were great and worth every cent. Cons: *MOST IMPORTANTLY: Number one, In this day and age I cannot believe staff are not trained in sexual harassment of guests. It is a vacation destination with pools and beaches and we travelers are in a foreign environment and it is important guests can trust staff and feel comfortable to stay and use facilities. We were a group of women and on a number of occasions, 3 off the top of my head, male staff in restaurants, bars and grounds staff made inappropriate, vile sexual comments, or tried to pursue adding me and the women in my group via social media while working, even after advances were rebuffed. We became so uncomfortable we avoided those restaurants as much as possible and walked each other to our rooms. This was a HUGE damper on our trip -The beach was in horrible condition and smelly from seaweed. -The pool was clearly not regularly cleaned and murky with leaves floating in the water. And the one day it looked good enough to get in, they added chlorine treatment to the water during early afternoon peak opening hours for the pool and we were unable to use it in the heat. Why not add it in before or after pool hours??? -The adult pool had not one pool umbrella to use for shade. -Restaurants close extremely early, so after 8:40 pm good luck finding food you’re on your own. -There is no daytime or nightlife on the resort. Extremely boring especially during Covid times, resort activities & recreation are important. -None of the 3 phones in our room worked so we had to order room service through one of our other guests rooms or directly at the restaurant. We also could not reach the front desk for any kind of assistance. -Even with the above issue, we personally walked to the front desk to request a pickup from our room to the front lobby on our last day, and nobody came. We had to take a good walk to the front lobby with our large luggage and bags. -And finally, see the attached pictures to see our numerous alive, then dead roach friends that greeted us on the first floor of our building every single day for 3 days, Never picked up. (RIP)

Overall great resort but needs some TLC and seaweed clean up

We recently stayed at The Crane from 4/30 - 5/7. This was our second time at The Crane, with the first time being back in April 2016. Pros: *Overall, the resort is beautiful, the food and drinks are very good (although pricey), and the staff is friendly (contrary to other reviews said). *The rooms are large and spacious with a great kitchenette, two full bathrooms, and a washer/dryer. Cons: *There were two instances where there was no water whatsoever in the entire suite. However, both instances, lasted no more than one hour (this also happened on the last day for our 2016 trip and seems to be a common occurrence at the Crane). *Another day, there was no AC due to a scheduled maintenance we were made aware of a few days prior from 6am-5pm. *While the resort is beautiful, it can highly benefit from some TLC, especially the rooms in our opinion. *The most disappointing thing about this current trip vs. 2016 was the EXTENSIVE amount of seaweed on the beach and ocean. ***We visit the Caribbean to experience the beaches and ocean, not the pools (which we also visited and were a bit cloudy). While we understand the resort has no control of the seaweed in the ocean, there could have been a better effort to remove the seaweed from the beach. For example, you could see old seaweed that seems to have been there for weeks or longer (i.e. different/darker color, than the seaweed closer to the actual the ocean, with lots of bugs in it). This resort is NOT cheap, and we work very hard all year to be able to afford a week to enjoy a clean beach/ocean, not to see it covered in seaweed with no attempt to rectify the issue, which is completely unacceptable. Management should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this. ***We heard the beach tractor previously used to remove the seaweed was broken. Even if this was true, there could have been a crew of ~4 workers manually raking and wheel barrowing the seaweed every day, all day (or at least in the early morning hours) and it would have been much more cleaner/presentable – so there is NO EXCUSE. Hopefully management reads this and takes action for future guests to enjoy how beautiful the Crane beach can be. *****Also, please note, we heard from a lot of guests they simply avoided the beach due the seaweed. This supports what we saw firsthand, which was the beach being nearly empty for several days. This also hurts the staff at the Grove on the beach b/c there are minimal guests to serve food and drinks to and make some money.
