Winters in Malia are mild and damp with some rainfall spread over the season and cooler temperatures arriving in the late-afternoon. Malia weather in January is cold at night but warms up in the daytime, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking through the mountains or doing some sightseeing in the nearby city of Heraklion.

    Geographical influences

Malia is a beach resort on the northeast coast of Crete. It’s located in the Heraklion regional unit, which makes it a great base for further exploring the island and seeing all the historical attractions. The climate is Mediterranean, with long, hot summers and mild, damp winters. Northerly winds reach the island and bring cooler weather to the north that doesn’t have the same shelter as the south, which is protected from strong winds by the mountains in the centre of the island.

The daily average is around 15°C, which is mild and enjoyable for the peak of the winter season in Malia. It gets cooler overnight and temperatures often drop to lows of 8°C. The average sea temperature is a cool 16°C with sea breezes travelling at an average speed of 10mph. You can look forward to ten hours of sunshine a day but you’ll need to check the forecast for upcoming rain showers. There’s around 78mm of rainfall throughout the month, so the chance you’ll see some rain during your stay is fairly high.
