Lovely and restful
Nice place for a relaxing stay. Relaxing hotel and nice staff. lovely and clean restaurant next door, bus service outside the hotel regular taxi service if required, quiet bar for evening drinks, pools lovely, would recommend.
A wonderful place to spend the New Year
I stayed here with my partner and her family for a week at the end of 2022 and had a fantastic time. For starters the hotel itself is absolutely beautiful, from the gorgeous ocean-side view out your window to the extremely high quality of the rooms themselves. The rooms are very large with a *huge* shower and, impressively, THREE USB ports on each side of the bed. Food at the restaurant is to a high standard and the portion sizes are very large for the money - I had a 20 Euro tuna steak and couldn't finish the sides. I recommend the hanging kebabs which are delicious and a lot of fun. Staff at the hotel are also very friendly and helpful. Because we stayed during the off-season reception allowed us to have a late check-out at 3pm for free (rather than the usual 12pm), which was a nice touch. Only real complaint is it'd be nice if the pool was heated in non-summer months because it was FREEZING and only the hardiest of swimmers will probably want to take a dip. A minor gripe though as I still had a lot of fun sunning myself by the pool. Location-wise you'll probably want to get a bus into Funchal town as it's about 90-120 minute walk otherwise and quite a perilous one at that. The hotel does lay on a shuttle bus but I found it easier to use the local bus service which was 2 Euros each way and incredibly easy to use. Overall I'd absolutely come back here again - it's a beautiful hotel with great, hard-working staff and incredible food/drink. If you stay over New Year's you'll have an especially fantastic time if you get the gala dinner and stay for the fireworks display.
Excellent views but be prepared for travel to town.
I stayed for 5 nights in this good hotel. The views are splendid; my taxi driver said they were probably the best of any hotel in Funchal and he was right. I’d booked a superior bay view room which is in the newer part: good sized room, huge bathroom with walk in shower, lots of storage and wardrobe space and a balcony with brilliant views. Checkin was welcoming and efficient. The layout of the hotel is a bit confusing at first being on so many levels but once understood it’s fine. The garden and pool area on the roof is lovely to sit in: loads of different areas and a pool (which I didn’t try). And the views are awesome. I spent a morning working from the roof! Everything was really clean, the room serviced really well each day (mid afternoon for my 4th floor room) and I felt safe. The point to note (as other reviewers have) is that the hotel is some way outside Funchal. Walking isn’t really an option: busy roads, no pavement and extremely steep. The best way is by bus. The Hotel provides a shuttle 3 times a day (which I didn’t use) and also details of the local number 39 Bus (about 1 an hour). BUT there are lots of other buses that will stop en route to/from further away places. I’d say there is a bus every 20 mins or so most of the day- download one of the travel apps (Moovit worked for me) and follow that. I went into Funchal and back everyday, day and night and had no problems (the bus drivers will like you more if you have expect money or change, not notes!). Even getting a bus back we’ll into the evening after a dinner in Funchal was easy. My disappointment was over breakfast; perfectly decent (cereals, fruit, breads, cold cuts, cheese etc) just perhaps a bit boring after a few days. So- stay for the views which are amazing, and if you don’t need to be in walking distance of the town and are happy to use public transport. If you’re someone who likes to be in the thick of the action in a town, it’s probably not for you. Despite the boring breakfast, I’d stay again.
