Hotel on the cliffs.
Hi, let me tell you about the Hotel Rocamar as it was my first time visiting Madeira & I booked it mainly on the reviews and location. Location: The Hotel is located around 10km west of Madeira Airport which is mainly an uphill drive along ER101 to Caniço. Once you get to the hotel it’s situated in a small road and the hotel sits on the cliffs. Rooms: I booked a room with a sea view & was pleasantly surprised, I was on the 4th floor, the room was huge with plenty of space, a small kitchen with everything you need if you want to cook something for yourself, air-con which I didn’t need, one tv in the lounge & one in the bedroom, plenty of storage, sofa, chairs, lots of storage space for your clothes, balcony was a massive wrap around one with a view of the ocean, you could sit there and catch the sunrise just before breakfast. There’s a safe if you need it payable at reception, also plenty of English movies & channels to watch. Meals: The restaurant was easy to find as I could see it from my room, I booked half board so I could explore the island during the day. Breakfast was good & there’s plenty to choose from, the chef will make you a good sized omelette if you ask, coffee machines were good and there’s plenty of them, nothing worse than one machine and a massive queue to use it, lots of cold meats and vegetables on offer, plus fruit & cakes at the end. Evening Meal. The meals were pretty good to be fair, a good choice of Fish & Meat dishes & Vegetarian options, I went back a few times on certain dishes as they were so nice & stayed pretty hot too, Desserts were a bit limited to Jelly, Cake and a bit of fruit, but you won’t go hungry that’s for sure, as I was half board I had to buy my drinks with my meal. Things close by: Right lets go, if you walk right out of the Hotel you can walk along Caniço promenade which is a nice walk along the seafront, also around 6mins drive away is the Christo Rei statue, park up and walk down to the viewpoint, also a nice place to catch the sunset. You can get the 155 Bus to Funchal or you can book a shuttle bus from reception for 5€. Parking: Probably the worst part of the holiday is parking, I hired a car and struggled to park on my arrival around 15.30, it’s a small road on a hill with a small car park at the end, if you’re lucky enough to get in there it’s quite a tricky & tight manoeuvring as cars are parked in the middle as well as the sides. Most people head out around 09.00-09.30 so it gets busy out there with buses & pick ups happening, just in front of the hotel there’s about 5-6 nice spaces, get one if you have a chance as it’s easier to park here. But if you return in the middle of the day you’ll find a spot, if you return late you may miss out, I had to park in the next road up the hill a few times. Conclusion: Well all in all I really enjoyed the stay at the Rocamar, staff were friendly and advised you on everything at hand, the island is beautiful and this hotel is a great base from where to start exploring, everything is clean and well maintained, the beds were comfy & there’s a few bars, restaurants & shops close by, even a petrol station just up the hill, so I would recommend you’re stay here and I would love to go back someday.
A Gem of a place.
I booked this for a 3 day break based on the photos. It is dramatically build on a cliff on the south of Madeira. My room was huge and had a terrace overlooking the sea. The place is big and a bit of a maze. It is very clean. It is 4 star and that is because although it has excellent facilities it is no frills. But that is nothing to be concerned about. The staff are excellent. I did bed and breakfast and the breakfast was great, catering to different tastes. It is half way between Funchal and the airport. You can get a local bus to Funchal or the hotel has a daily shuttle There is also nightly entertainment, which was great fun. I absolutely loved it here and I will go back at some point.
Nice enough hotel, but beware of Booking.com scam!
Lovely seaside location, the new rooms are very clean and well equipped. There are shops and restaurants in the surrounding area, and the public bus into Funchal takes about 30 minutes if you are not using a car. There is live entertainment in the evenings, and a plentiful breakfast. However our experience was spoiled after being cheated by Booking.com. We paid for and were promised a sea view room with balcony, however when we arrived the hotel staff informed us that they had only been sent a reservation and the money for a cheaper room. We spent over an hour in reception on the phone to both Booking.com and their "partner company", a Spanish firm called Hotelbeds. Each company just blamed the other and refused to do anything to help. We had to pay the hotel an extra 30 Euros per night upfront in order to be given the room that we had been promised. So you pay top price for the best room, the hotel only gets the money for a cheaper room, and somebody somewhere pockets the difference! After returning, I exchanged many emails and phone calls with Booking.com trying to get my money back, but all they ever do is say they will get back to you and then never do so. They don't care. So my advice is don't book through Booking.com unless you want to be scammed!!
