Good and bad - Great location and beach - Not enough value for money
There are both ups and downs about this resort, but location is 5/5 stars. It is not a place where you feel you get value for money. You pay for the location and an amazing beach acces with gigantic waves splashing and hammering in on the beautiful coast line. If you like big waves you will have lots of fun. The beach is great facing south. If you don’t like sand the resort i huge and have 3 big pools. One of them with a sun deck with a view of the ocean. The restaurant and the sun deck have amazing views of the ocean and the giant rock standing on the beach. This is all extremely beautiful. Resort grounds are very well kept with old trees and palm trees. The resort is 55 years old but everything is very well maintained. The garden layout is very beautiful. Rooms are spacious and very clean. The AC works extremely well but is not needed because of the nice climate. So all of the above mentioned earns the 5 stars, but there a lot of “Buts” about this resort too… Downsides: – We were here 4 days in mid-July. The resort was 98-99% full according to the receptionist. The resort has just about 103 rooms and can take a maximum of about 300 guests. There are many sunbeds and since we were up eating breakfast around 9 am we always found a sunbed at the beach. But all 4 days we were here there were guests who couldn’t find an available sunbed on the beach. The staff put up umbrellas so people could lie on the sand on a towel. But not really good enough for at 5 star resort. Usually they are characterized by “always enough sun beds at all times”. - Staff seemed obsessed with your room number. Whenever you need a beach towel, the staff ask for your room number. - At 5 pm beach towel service ends. So our daughter stood totally wet after a swim and asked for a beach towel. The beach staff had a plastic bag with about 20 clean beach towels at his feat, but she was told “beach towel service had ended”. At my presence she was given a towel. I strongly suggest the resort to keep this service open for all guests until the sun has set. An evening swim should be possible in this wonderful climate at this amazing beach. - A mother stood with 4 towels and asked for more towels. She was told she had got enough and couldn´t get more. I believe she had a family of 5. - Restaurants were extremely expensive and poor quality. We ate at the grill the first evening and decided the quality of food was so bad we had to go out of the resort for all meals except the included breakfast. We had a car and found nice restaurants in the area 2-15 minutes drive from the hotel. - The bread at the breakfast buffet was extremely old and dry. I talked to the chefs and they didn’t seem to understand the problem or agree. Mayby they just like 3 day old dry and hard bread in Portugal? For Danish standards this was not eatible nor worth a 5 star resort. The breakfast was nice but not great. - Turn down service was already done at about 5 pm. This is a bit early to have all the curtains down! On the positive side: - The was a very active and attentive lifeguard service. They truly did a great job and made the beach feel very safe inspite of the enormous waves. They marked the beach up every day and changed flags whenever the waves changed. The waves did get that high at one point so they closed the beach (swimming illigal). - The vallet parking was free and the service worked quite well. The resort area is gated and that worked well too. - The staff was generally very friendly. Finally a few things that can be both good and bad depending on your needs. The resort is VERY big. So depending on where your room is you might have a very long walk to the beach or the restaurants. Waves are BIG. This is not at beach for toddlers or very small kids. We saw grown men get turned upside down hitting their head to the ground in waves they could not handle.
A gorgeous cliffside ocean retreat in the Algarve, Portugal
I visited for a quick 5 day summer getaway in July 2022. It was my first international trip since we welcomed Covid into our lives. This time of year was apparently their “busy” season. I rarely saw other guests except during breakfast (which was exquisite). The staff were very attentive and helpful. I especially found the concierge staff (Ricardo Portuguese) to be extremely helpful with planning prior to my arrival. As a solo traveler, I often use concierge services in advance to set up as much as possible. They were able to arrange airport transfers and upon my request, charge the transfers to my final resort bill (I prefer to avoid needing a lot of cash). The resort itself was the perfect combination of tranquility and luxury. The property grounds were beautifully maintained and included a fresh herb garden. Their private beach allowed gorgeous ocean views, while basking in the sunlight. The daily breakfast buffet had a wide variety of vegetarian options and the delicious pastries changed daily. Options for soy or oat milk for my morning lattes were appreciated. The fresh seafood options at dinner were plentiful. Their spa was an absolute retreat of serenity and relaxation. The staff (Melanie) were also helpful with arranging everything. The best and most unique feature I enjoyed about the spa? The ceiling of the wet sauna was painted black and had little lights. It truly felt as though you were staring into the night sky. GENIUS! A much needed complement to an already incredible vacation. The Vilalara Thalassa Resort is a must when visiting the Algarve region of Portugal.
