Overlooking Alvor Beach, one of the best beaches of the Algarve and extending for several kilometres, this contemporary style hotel is situated in a privileged location close to the Alvor Estuary, a major nature protection area for birds. The centre of Alvor is within a 10-minute walk, Portimão, the largest city in West Algarve, is 7 km away. In the city, guests will find themselves in a place of many cafes and restaurants. Faro International Airport is at a distance of 74 km. The hotel offers modern guest rooms with air conditioning, cable TV, mini bar, safe, telephone, hair dryer and bath amenities. Guests can dine at the on-site restaurant with a wide selection of international and local dishes. There are also bars where to relax with live music and variety of drinks. To relax after the day with sauna, Turkish bath and indoor pool or magic spa and massages are well-served to the needs of all guests.

The Dom Joao undoubtedly is beautifully located 10 mins walk from the centre of Alvor overlooking the sea. We asked for a quiet room and were given one at the end of the corridor on the 4th floor which was a definite plus, although it felt a little confined for a superior sea view category but it did have a balcony and it did have a sea view. There is a bus stop just outside the hotel which enabled us to move around the area easily without a car. The breakfast buffet was extensive but I am afraid to say that the cooked selection was in the main lukewarm which would also apply to the evening meal. An issue they need to address judging by other reviews. We opted for an evening meal package but it wasn’t made clear to us at the start of the week that we needed to pay for our drinks before leaving the restaurant. We were under the impression that the drinks bill would be charged to our room at the end of our stay as we gave our room number to the desk staff each evening on entering the restaurant.

Perfect location. Very clean hotel. Some parts are slightly dated need a bit of maintenance before it gets worse. Fantastic breakfast, lovely spacious restaurant. Good rooms, only issue slightly crammed between twin beds. No British tv channels. Free coded safety deposit box. Perfect for a quiet golfing holiday. Time of year little quiet in resort but restaurants are excellent.

Decrepit, dinghy and disgusting. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

We stayed at Pestana for the Golf facilities but had a terrible time. THE GOOD: -The golf courses were, admittedly, excellent with a good selection of courses. -Good practice facilities. -Provided an iPhone charger when I needed one. -The breakfasts were okay. -Rooms were reasonably clean and cleaned daily. -That’s pretty much it. THE BAD: STAFF: -Customer service was terrible, they wouldn’t so much as smile when they talked to you. -Unable to take a simple requests like providing a safe room to store your golf clubs/valuables when you checked in/out. Unacceptable for a golf hotel. -Manager came across as inexperienced and incompetent. He refused to acknowledge any of the numerous inadequacies in the hotel including brown water coming from the showers, which he admitted were emanating from a burst pipe. For some reason, when presented with evidence of the brown water in the showers, it seemed beyond his comprehension that the problem wasn’t actually fixed like he said. Looking at the reviews, customer safety and comfort seems to be an optional extra, not a priority for staff at Pestana. -There are no basic amenities like porters with trollies or buggies to take your heavy golf bags up with you. -If you are staying at a ‘luxury villa’, please be ready to sleep in tatty, moth eaten bedding and worry about the cleanliness of your room. The state of these rooms were so dire, our group moved to the main hotel. Far from the ‘luxury, beachside’ experience we were promised. -Please also be ready to carry all these above items with you to and from your room everyday, as, one of the numerous inadequacies of this hotel is providing transport to each customer. FOOD: -Food was often left for hours under the lit heaters at the ‘restaurant’. -Said ‘food’ was cold and on occasion, undercooked. -Some members of the party dining with us fell unwell after eating the seafood dishes. -The squid was rubbery and tasted stale. -The cakes were, for the lack of a better term, disgusting. SUMMARY: The state of this hotel was shocking. We paid premium as we were under the impression that this would be a 4 star experience but dirty shower water, inadequate facilities and terrible customer service demonstrates how far this hotel falls short of the service that has been advertised. Avoid! This is such a shame, as, under the right management and care, this hotel could meet the standards expected of a 4* hotel, not barely scrape by as a 2 star, which is what I would give it, if I felt generous, based on my experience.
