Amazing Stay and Great Staff
My wife and I stayed at Secrets the Vine from January 12-22nd. The first thing that we have to acknowledge is the staff at the resort. They are amazing and go out of their way to make your stay special. We stayed on the 24th floor and had Jessy and Yuri as our butlers. We usually don’t use butlers at resorts but they were both so friendly and went above and beyond to ensure that we wanted for nothing. We always visit Mexico a couple of times a year and my wife and I both agree that Secrets the Vine is one of the best of the Secrets resorts out there. We loved the high rise style of resort as it was very easy for my wife to get around as she has some mobility issues. We are UVC members and always enjoy having the preferred access at the resorts. Carlos was our UVC representative. If you are a UVC member or interested in enquiring about the program, look him up. He was very helpful. When we arrived we were upgraded to a preferred king suite which was very roomy and had a fantastic view of both the ocean and lagoon. It had a prefect as you can see the sunrise and sunsets each day. I read that some people were concerned about elevator wait times, there were none. Pools - We used the preferred pool regularly which was located on the 12th floor of the resort and had a great view over the resort and the ocean. Daniel was our waiter at the pool when we were there and was one of the most pleasant people that we talked to on our trip. We also spent some time down near the main pools which had some beautiful spots overlooking the ocean. If you wanted a prime seat at the preferred pool you had to be up there by 8:00 am. Alejandro was our pool concierge at the pool and always took care setting up guests with seats and umbrellas. Alejandro is an asset to the AMR and should be recognized for his commitment to his job and the resort. One thing we appreciated was that you didn’t have to rush out first thing in the morning to get a seat by the pools. The towel game was non existent although if you decide to get up at 10:00 am you might not get a prime spot. Restaurants- Breakfast was your typical resort buffet breakfast. The fruit was always fresh and the omelette station moved people through very quickly. If you want to be served you could have breakfast at Olio on the 12th floor where they serve eggs Benedict. It’s important to note that Olio is only available to preferred guests for breakfast but open to all guests for dinner. Dragons, Bluewater Grill (Omar was an amazing server) and the Nebbiolo were our favourites during the trip. We had lunch at the Sea Salt Grill a couple of times and it was excellent as well. We had lunch a couple of times at the buffet and although we are not buffet people we always found something good to eat. The Vine coffee shop was excellent having all kinds of treats and specialty coffees. Entertainment- The entertainment team was excellent at keeping all of the guest engaged. During the days they had pool volleyball, games, etc. In the evening they had various entertainment inside the lobby and out by the main pool. One evening they had an aqua show at the pool that was excellent!! Gym- Excellent place for a morning or afternoon workout. The equipment is “Life Fitness” and kept in excellent condition. Nice to work out overlooking the ocean and resort. The overall service and friendliness at the resort was excellent and we had no complaints during our stay. Yes there are some waits at the restaurants if you show up after 7:00 pm but like much of North America, Cancun is also suffering with a hospitality staffing shortage so be patient and remember that you’re on holidays so what’s the rush? We totally enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning.
Nice all inclusive
We had neighbors that spoke highly so we decided to make our first trip to Cancun. The resort is beautiful, clean, not too crowded (other than the pools and steakhouse). Staff is very courteous (I am horrible with remembering names, but Armando at front desk was great). Room (preferred level jr suite) was great, amazing views, plenty of room, huge walk in shower. His and hers closets, huge balcony (but no privacy on the balconies- there are just these decorative slats that you can see right through so you can see all the way down the whole floor balconies). Food is average/good overall, pretty common for all inclusive resorts (some pretty good- some pretty bland). The club level rooms have an excellent small lounge on 21st floor, and access to club pool and bar on 12th floor. Our only real disappointment was the time share sales pitch(es). When we checked in, a very nice woman came over and said she would explain the hotel amenities. She was very nice, but it was basically a sales pitch to get us to attend a time share presentation. We had to say no at least a dozen times, she kept offering more freebies and "upgrades" and we just kept saying no. This was 2 minutes after we check in so basically this is our first impression of our stay. Another couple we talked to the next day had someone approach them at the pool and ask if they wanted priority reservations at the steakhouse (normally it is first come). They didn't realize the catch was they were taken into a private back room at the restaurant and staff tried to get them signed up for the time share presentation. There were 6 of them, when they repeatedly said no they were told they had to buy $200 worth of wine in order to eat at the steakhouse. They got up, complained to the manager, and left. We were at the pool the next day, and had someone make us the same offer ("priority" reservations at the steakhouse) so I don't doubt their story. Overall a great staff, nice hotel, great location, great room, decent food. But stop with the sneaky time share sales pitches.
Not nearly on par with a Ritz, Four Seasons, or Montage resort
We stayed in an ocean front honeymoon suite on the 27th floor - the view was exceptional as being on a corner allowed us to view both sunrises over the ocean and sunsets over the lagoon. This view was the highlight of the trip. The good: - the view - 99% of the staff - friendly and hardworking. - common areas - the vine lounge on the first floor - the exercise room - plenty of cardio and weightlifting equipment. The bad: - The food is not "5-star" quality. We ate at all of the establishments and found the food to be disappointing. - There is no poolside food service, only drinks, so you need to either go to one of the restaurants or get food to go from the barefoot grille's buffet table. - The "house wine" is Don Silvestre (Chile) and they offer varietals of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and a sparkling wine. If you want anything different, you must pay extra for it. The wait staff must be incentivized to sell wine as they are very aggressive in pushing their other selections which generally start at $100 US per bottle. - They offered $200 of resort credits with our package but it turned out to be $200 worth of coupons to incentivize you to purchase wine and spa packages. For example, you get 4 coupons of $10 each that can be applied to wine but only one coupon per bottle, or $40 off of a $200 spa service. - When receiving our coupons, there was a hard sell to get us to join some form of Secrets Membership Club in exchange for discount spa or tour offers. - At one the pools, it felt like a spring break atmosphere, only instead of college students it was 50- to 60-year-olds doing shots, belly flops and tossing a football back and forth. Along these lines, it was not unusual to see folks come into the Vine Lounge early in the evening with no shirts on and interrupt the soft entertainment being offered with their boisterous behavior. - Our room on the 27th floor and part of the preferred club was tired. It was clean and housekeeping was great, but the room is ready for a makeover, especially since the resort represents themselves as being 5-star. In our case, some of the lighting didn't work properly, the bathroom counter was stained and chipped, and the mirrors were disilvering along the edges. - I am not sure the preferred club level is worth the added cost. The primary benefit is access to a private pool area that is quiet. There is a private lounge with a bar but given the number of other restaurants and bars that are available this isn't a benefit worth paying for. They say the preferred club lounge has exquisite desserts and premium liquors, but we found them to be the same as found elsewhere on the resort. - There was a sewer type smell in the lobby during our stay and we finally determined it was coming from a water feature inside a bar used at night for karaoke. Overall, we won't be back as it didn't meet our expectations, but there seemed to be many people enjoying themselves, thus the divergent ratings on this website and elsewhere. Enjoy, but if you are accustomed to stays at the Ritz, Montage or Four Seasons, then Secrets - The Vine is probably not for you.
