New Year's Eve stay at the Kempinski gozo
Gozo, the sister island to Malta in the Mediterranean needs no introduction to its quiet and cultural, rustic village identity surrounded by crystal clear blue waters and always sun drenched with a warmth second only to its inhabitants jovial hearts! The Kempinski San Lawrenz in Gozo is a hotel that has managed to keep Gozo culture at heart and improve upon its royalty and upper class grandeur!! It is a property that is as big as it is vast yet politely quiet in its magnificence! The Staff from top Manger level right down to the Housekeeping ladies were all very polite and courteous and always willing to help you out with your requirements. The rooms spotless and its imposing reception regal and its restaurants splendor in sun light having mellow period furnishings, all very pleasing to the eyes, as is the vast culinary and gastro choices served in them. We stayed over the New Year's Eve weekend and also attended the Gala Buffett, again a culinary feast of many varied tastes not only Mediterranean but offerings of oriental Sushi and Oysters complimented the spread. It was a night to remember for us made extraordinarily more pleasurable by the staff and the Management alike.
This amazing hotel offers the best in 5 star service on the island
The level of service is beyond 5 star. The staff are well trained and know how to make a guest feel welcomed and special. The property is well maintained, but despite that, it is starting to show its age and could therefore do with a good make over. I did experience some malfunctions in the ageing equipment, but it was addressed immediately upon reporting it to the ladies in red. Full marks for that. That's why this review still gets all 5 stars in the overall rating.
Bad choice especially with kids
We checked in on the 29th of July through to the 2nd of August. I was suprised at check in there was not even a welcome drink at a 5 star hotel. We had requested an early check but it was as though no one knew and it wasn’t available. When the room was ready it was a big step down from out previous multi room suite in Malta in the Hilton. It was ok but a fairly average a single room with some small kids beds added with a small balcony. Was that really even a suite or just a standard room with some temporary beds put in? The food was generally good on the half board but complicated its not really true half board in some resturants the choice is limited or there are extra charges. Of the food the breakfast I thought was the highlight really close to excellent except for the bacon. The pools were disappointing first of the 3 the main pool was over 14 year olds only the 2 other pools weren't great for kids. One with a water feature of no real use nor ornimante had a too deep part and very shallow end impractical for kids. The other again was too deep for the youngest for him to even reach the bottom with a all-around depth of 1.2 meters, except for a entry part about a foot deep. Not sure about cleanliness at least one swim top went in white came out brownish. A lot of fallen mini tree "fruit" sunken to the bottom rotting away. On last evening of our 4 day stay after the previous evenings barbeque child number 2 had an upset stomach that resulted in a massive vomit on the road during our evening walk. Back at the hotel on our last meal after a bread role and some water he was rushed to the lobby bathroom where he redecorated in hint of vomit. Mum took him back to the room. The restaurant were really helpful had her dinner sent up as room service. While I finished my own with child number 1. Next day he seemed ok but at breakfast he couldn't again hold a thing down and vomited the now tiny content of his stomach on the breakfast room floor as we made a quick exit for the lobby loos. Still between vomits he was ok for the pool, boys!. We had a complimentary late checkout. Somehow his Malta baseball cap was left behind in the lobby we came back and it was great to see the staff had found it and kept it safe for us. We travelled back to Malta by car ferry on return to Hilton he had one more huge vomit in the lobby toilets there before staging a recovery. However after our evening meal that or the next night child no 1 who had been on a down hill trajectory now followed suit and having just had a great Thai meal threw the lot straight back up in the lobby toilet. For the remaining few days she was repeatedly ill with just about any food. She could barely enjoy the pool and we were severely limited the hire car meanwhile sat mostly unused. She even threw up one last time at the airport costa coffee going home. By the time we got home she was over it but as far as I was concerned a good portion of our trip was severely affected by our stay at the Kemplinski. It was were it all began on our 4th night between possibly something eated at the barbeque or after using the pool. Both kids picked up bad stomache bugs. I contacted the Kemplinski on returning home but they were not prepared to accept any responsibility. The trip cost us a significant amount of cash and the insurance company paid out a sum total of nothing! I wouldn't recommend visiting with kids at all.
