Hotel by the sea
Simple hotel, but very pleasant by the sea. Hotel built on top of the rocks with a leisure area with private beach and swimming pool with wonderful views. Incredible view of the Etna volcano. Accommodations and services without luxury. Located far from the center. Car is required, there is paid parking at the hotel.
Excellent hotel in an idyllic location
We had an great stay at the hotel. The location is perfect, with beautiful views from all aspects of the hotel. The pool and beach entered through the cliff are unique and such a great feature. The breakfast choice was excellent and the staff very attentive and helpful especially Salvatore in the restaurant. My only slightly negative comment would be that the hotel shuttle bus to the town doesn't drop you that close to centre, which isn't ideal for those who are not as good on their feet of if you are wearing high healed shoes. However, we would definitely recommend the hotel and return.
Excellent, except for the noise from the retuarant
We recently stayed here for our anniversary, and had a lovely time. The hotel is beautiful, and the location is stunning. Our room had a balcony over-looking the bay with Etna in the distance, and we never tired of the view. The room was spacious, clean, and well-appointed. The only issue (and this is what drops the review from 5* to 4*) was the NOISE. We were in room 303, which is below the restaurant. This meant a great deal of noise from trolleys etc above, loud enough to wake me even though I wear ear-plugs. It would go on all evening, sometimes quite late, and start by 7:30am, thwarting every attempt I made at a lie-in (something I seldom get at home, so look forward to on holiday). The worst occasion went on past mid-night and started again around 6:30am. So while the beds are incredibly comfortable, I didn’t actually get much sleep. I recommend requesting a room elsewhere in the building. Breakfast is good, with gorgeous views of the sea and Etna if you sit outside (but outside you will find yourself harassed by wasps). There is the usual fare of cereals, yoghurt, fruit, breads, hot items, etc, an impressive array of pastries, and also the Sicilian speciality of brioche and granita, all good quality. The only thing which lets it down is the drinks. The juice was mediocre, and the coffee frankly poor. It just comes from a machine, producing rather watery espresso. I love good espresso, and expected better from a 4* hotel in Italy. The bar was another highlight for us. Again, gorgeous views to be had, friendly staff, and some good food options available - I highly recommend the excellent gelato! It also gets top-marks for the wifi - excellent, high-speed, pretty much everywhere, even the beach! The views however do come at a price. The hotel is pretty far from Taormina itself, so you can’t just ‘nip back’ between sight-seeing and dinner if you’re eating in town. You can walk, but according to Google it’s a good 30 minutes, and it’s a pretty steep incline up a narrow winding road with no proper pavement, we certainly didn’t fancy it! There is a shuttle bus from the hotel, but it only runs a few times a day, and due to limited seats must be booked in advance, and they do get booked out. I would like to encourage the hotel to run the bus more frequently, say once an hour to help with this (in particular a bus back at 9pm or 9:30pm would be helpful). If you can’t get the bus, and don’t want to walk, your other option is a taxi, which will cost about €15 each way. This is what we did when either the bus was full, or the times didn’t work for us. This wasn’t a deal breaker for us, but it did add to the cost of the week, so is something to keep in mind. Overall we loved our stay, but would say the hotel needs to improve the shuttle service, and reduce the noise for rooms below the restaurant (and better coffee wouldn’t hurt).
