Grand Hotel Capodimonte is a elegant and traditional hotel in the popular town of Sorrento, on the south west coast of Italy. Built into the side of cliffs, the hotel has panoramic views over Sorrento and out into the Bay of Naples. The town's main square, Piazza Tasso, is a short stroll from the hotel, and here you'll find a number of bars and nightclubs on cobbled streets and a bustling nightlife scene. The beaches on the Sorrento Peninsula are formed of shingle and rock and the closest one is a short walk from the hotel. Grand Hotel Capodimonte is built into a cliff side, with the reception being reached by a lift. It features a series of interconnecting pathways and tiered balconies, landscaped gardens, swimming pools and sun terraces. Renovated in 2015, the hotel's interior is traditional, with light walls offset by a subtle colour scheme. The hotel has five cascading outdoor pools. There are two bars that serve local and international drinks throughout the day, as well as a buffet restaurant and an a la carte restaurant. If you have a car, you can travel along the Amalfi Coast and explore the UNESCO-listed area with its winding roads, steep cliffs and sea views. If you fancy a day trip you can visit Pompeii or the city of Naples, at the base of Mount Vesuvius.
Grand Hotel Capodimonte is a 400m stroll from the start of Corso Italia, Sorrento's main shopping street, and 600m from the beach. In Sorrento you can dine at a seaside restaurant, explore the garden-filled depths of the Vallone dei Mulini in the heart of the town, or wander through the cloisters of the Church of San Francesco. You can take a day trip to the island of Capri, where you can walk through the cobbled streets lined with designer boutiques, or enjoy a spot of people watching in the main square. Or you could visit the ancient site of Pompeii and view the famous ruins caused by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Grand Hotel Capodimonte's buffet restaurant offers a hot and cold breakfast, as well as lunch and dinner. You can also treat yourself in the a la carte restaurant for dinner. During the day you can get drinks and snacks from the snack bar, while at night you can visit the lobby bar, which stays open until late.
The quaint fishing village area of Marina Grand is within walking distance of the hotel and home to a pretty harbour area where you can admire the boats and enjoy a meal or drink during the day or in the evening time.
All rooms at the hotel are traditional in style and come with a balcony or terrace, Wi-Fi, flatscreen satellite TV and air conditioning (mid-May-mid-Oct).

I honestly don’t know where all these amazing reviews are coming from but I didn’t stay at the same hotel as them! No offence but if you were born after the 1980’s then this hotel is not for you and certainly not for families with children. The breakfast service is one of the worse I’ve ever experienced in my life… one person cooking eggs in a tiny pan, serving one person at a time… you can imagine how long it takes to get your eggs… yes a 20 minute queue at peak times between 8:30-10am! Usually hotels have a large hot plate in which they are cooking serveral orders of eggs at once but not here. And what’s worse is that when it’s finally served-it’s disgusting. My scrambled eggs were covered in oil so they weren’t even worth the wait! Breakfast is served until 10am but if you want anything close to this time don’t expect it! At 9:45 everything was empty including the bacon and beans and not one member of staff was attempting to refill. I asked three different members of staff for beans and eventually I was brought a plate of cold beans. The next day beans weren’t even on display! Also the breakfast service staff need training on different types of popular coffee that people in this century like to drink nowadays. I asked for a latte and one member of staff didn’t have a clue, however when I asked for this at the pool snack bar/restaurant they knew exactly what I wanted and brought me the perfect drink! Other than the stunning views I wouldn’t rate this hotel in any way!
Lovely view
You are definitely paying for the location. The hotel is placed on the cliff near the centre overlooking the bay with views of Vesuvius. The tiered garden with several swimming pools is beautiful. Our son loved the pools, the middle smaller pools are 120 to 130 cm deep. The bottom pool is surprisingly quite large with one end being 2,5 m deep. We paid for superior room and were given a room on the second floor (209) just above the entrance to the hotel. The room was damp and musty perhaps because it was built to the cliff. It was also noisy as it was just above the entrance facing a busy road. We could hear the traffic all night even with the windows and shutters shut. We asked the reception if we could be moved to a different, less smelly and quieter room and luckily were given room on the 4th floor just above the reception. That room was very different, still facing the road but as it was higher it was quieter, we could not hear the traffic at all at night, the balcony was three times bigger, the room didn’t smell at all and the decor was brighter and more modern, less dated. The room resembled the photo of the superior room from the hotel’s website. Rooms on the second and third floor seem to be just above the entrance to the hotel. The reception is on the 5th floor, restaurant just under the reception. Strangely our new room was on the 4th floor but above the reception. It seems that if you want to have a room with better view you need to get a room on 7th floor up. The hotel should really be selling rooms on 2nd and 3rd floor for much cheaper price, those rooms were old, damp and right by the busy road, completely different to the price equivalent on the 4th floor. We had breakfast included. Food choice for breakfast was vast. You have amazing pastry options which I loved. Some fresh fruit (mainly melon, pineapple and kiwi), some cereal options, breads, savoury options, juices (don’t expect fresh). Coffee was unfortunately tasteless. If you love coffee you might need to venture out for coffee. We didn’t try the cooked breakfast as there was always a long queue for that. We ate at the restaurant only once and it was when we arrived. As it was in the evening, we couldn’t be bothered to venture out. Service was very slow, confused and we had to remind the waiters a few times to bring the menu, to order and to pay. The food was actually quite good, but portions small, menu limited and prices twice expensive than in restaurants outside the hotel. Definitely avoid unless you have half board included. We ate only twice in the restaurant by the pool. Again for the convenience of staying in the hotel. The food was so mediocre and overpriced, with menu so limited, service so slow, that we went out for lunch on other days. The location of the hotel is very good. It’s a short walk to the centre of Sorrento and you get amazing restaurants just a few minutes walk from the hotel. If you love seafood, Marina Grande seafood restaurants are a short walk down the cliff. Shared facilities of the hotel were sparkling clean, the hotel has a large reception lounge, large tv room and a lot of seating everywhere around the hotel, both indoors and on the terraces. All are overlooking the bay with superb views. Shame that the food and beverage services are so bad. The tidiness and cleanliness of the pool area could be improved. The changing rooms by the 3rd pool were not cleaned during our entire week stay, there were dirty towels on the floor and leftover drinks. The garden, pools, the view, the location were good and despite the average breakfast and the issues with our rooms, we would stay again. The reception staff was the best. They sorted our room move quickly, very efficient with booking tours for us and informative when asked questions.
Best holiday to date
So so sad to leave Grand hotel Capodimonte. It is simply one of the best hotels I have stayed in. If you are looking for a hotel in Sorrento this is ideal with a short distance walk to the town and with the most amazing views. Classy vibes in Sorrento. The staff are so lovely- Mario, Carmen, AnnaMaria just to name a few. To be greeted by these lovelies everyday just made the stay more welcoming. The food is well, remarkable, and cannot be faulted. Sunset cocktails- so refreshing. The pool is just amazing. Can't wait for my next holiday there.
