The Peso is the currency in Cancun. It’s wise to order your travel money before you go, to make sure you can get on with your holiday fun without having to rush around looking for a bank and avoid the expensive rates at airport exchange kiosks.
Cash or card?
If you’d like to see the authentic side of Mexico by venturing to local shops or haggling in the markets, then cash is certainly king. Mexican Peso coins come as $1, $2, $5 and $10 and these are really handy for tipping (it’s customary to tip 10-15% of the bill). If you grab a bite to eat whilst you’re out and about, you’ll find more better value food outside of the main tourist areas too.
