Porto Antigo

Porto Antigo is a beachfront hotel in Santa Maria, a resort town at the southern end of the tropical island of Sal in the Republic of Cape Verde. Although the island itself is tiny, stretching only 30km from north to south, its extraordinary salt flats have been an important trade and tourist destination for decades. This whitewashed, red-roofed hotel sits on the sandy beach of Santa Maria, near a historic fishing port. The hotel has two pools one of which sits beside the ocean, with wide stone steps leading down from the pool and onto the sand. The semi-private beach itself is protected by a curved wall, giving the feeling of a secret tropical cove. You can enjoy views of this unusual feature from the hotel restaurant, which sits on the broadest part of the wall and stretches out into the water. When not sipping drinks on the sand or exploring the Santa Maria resort, you might like to enjoy a little island exploration. As Sal is quite small, most parts of it are easy to reach. A popular destination is the secret salt lake of Pedra de Lume, hidden inside the crater of an extinct volcano in the North of the island.

Sal is one of a handful of scattered islands that make up the Republic of Cape Verde, an archipelago some miles off Africa's North western Coast. It's the most developed of the islands, and although much of it is flat and dry, Santa Maria is an oasis-style resort town with palm trees lining the beach and avenues. North of Santa Maria are its famous salt pans; to the south lie the tropical open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. You may want to go island hopping around the other islands of Cape Verde by local ferry service from the port of Palmeira, on the West coast of Sal.

The hotel restaurant is open for a breakfast buffet in the morning and serves an a la carte dinner menu in the evening. You can eat inside or on the shaded terrace of the restaurant. Those wanting to cook for themselves will find ingredients in the shops in Santa Maria.

In Santa Maria you can watch surfers, go quad biking on the salt flats or board a ferry for a spot of Cabo Verde island hopping.

Two nice pool areas, one for each hotel building. Both have pool and deck with sun loungers and beautiful sea views. The hotel offers its guests free beach chairs on the beach.

Apartments and villas at Porto Antigo are simple and classic in style. Apartments have kitchenettes with basic kitchen equipment and fridges with freezers for Self Catering.

People are confused about what this place is. Lower your expectations

I almost didn’t book with this place because of past reviews. I am glad I did - here’s why: One thing common in most of the low reviews is the misunderstanding that this is a hotel. It is not. These are private apartments, with some to rent. Therefore, the staff downstairs are not really there to serve you, per se. They can help with some things but don’t expect quick service with a smile for your every need and convenience - go to Hotel Morabeza, Hotel D’Ojo or the Hilton for that. Location is great, it is very close to central with lovely grounds and beach - a bit tucked out but close enough to walk anywhere. The facilities in apartments are clean, functional but worn. They’re old - again, think the first apartment or flat you rented on your own out of student days, and that’s what you should expect. WiFi was excellent! I had the router in my room (37) and it is fast and great. It is for this reason alone I have not complained about the view. I am close to the road, where random men hang out ALL day. For privacy, I’ve had to put a sheet in half the balcony (the building site half); no building was ongoing during my stay but being near the road it is noisier and less private. I know that rooms further from the router don’t have WiFi and have to pay a lot for it. For this reason only, my sheet barrier against the view I don’t like is okay. The other view (towards the sea) is great! Also the mattress is okay but pillows are bad! If I was staying more than 3 nights I would leave because of the impending neck pain. Lower your expectations about what a self catering budget apartment on a low income island will be and you will be fine here!

Absolute Hell.

Wife booked this on the premise of a Seaview, bad decision, the booking we made was using pictures of the porto antigo 2, we have ended up in the porto antigo with no Seaview and the apartment is basically not fit for purpose let alone to spend a week trying to relax on holiday, we were scammed, beware if your thinking of booking to stay here through ocean club holidays, very deceptive and misleading in what they advertise!

Porto Antigo 2: Creepy guys everywhere at this place!

Apr 2021 | Not4UDude

I stayed in Porto Antigo 2 for several weeks, and whilst the apartment was OK, the clientele who live and stay here are the biggest problem at this residence (the clientele includes locals, expats, and tourists). Virtually every time I swam in the pool at PA2 (pictured on the cover photo here), I noticed lone men walking, lounging, and hanging around the pool, baldfacedly watching women swim in it. The whole pool area is a fishbowl, and there are creepy guys hanging all around that area. I even observed one of the security guards engaging in this behaviour. If you are a solo woman traveler, beware of this place!
