Cambodia Nightlife: Bars & Clubs

In neighbouring Thailand, the nightclubs and bars tend to cater to tourists, but in Cambodia the nightlife is run by locals and for the local tastes. That means you get an authentic atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else.

Typical nights out in Cambodia kick off at 7pm and go on past 1am. Clubs and bars open from the middle of the day and stay open till after their advertised closing' time. Don't be surprised if you see a lack of locals as the night wears on though. It's common for young people and even twenty-somethings to have curfews that start from around 9-10pm.

Your first port of call for great nightlife in Cambodia should be Siem Reap. Concentrated around the helpfully named Pub Street, you'll find hosts of tourist-friendly bars, restaurants and boutiques. These places stay open as late as possible and they're often packed until 4am.

What's more, there's plenty of drinks offers, with nightly happy hours offering $1 beers. Pub Street has a backpacker vibe which keeps the atmosphere casual and fun, but if it's not your style there are also the popular hotel bars. Many of these have rooftop lounges where you can indulge in more luxury than you'll find elsewhere in town. Imported wines and spirits are what's on the menu here, as well as authentic Khmer liquors for those looking for something more local.

In the capital of Phnom Penh, you'll find a vibrant party scene that's closer to what you might find in Bangkok or Hong Kong, with modern clubs, dance clubs and sports bars. Street 51 is the most exciting nightlife destination in Phnom Penh, filled with famous nightclubs like Heart of Darkness, Walkabout and Shanghai.

A popular destination is one of the karaoke bars, where locals and tourists alike sing their hearts out. It's a fun capital that has wild nights to match how bustling a city it is during the day.

Down to the coast, and the premier resort of Sihanoukville is a hot spot for late night partying. With its rows of luxury hotels, this busy port draws people from around the world to indulge in the evening's entertainment. There are Aussie themed pubs like the 24-hour G'day Mate, and Russian bars like The Snake Pit which serves rare imported spirits. All over, you'll find expat-run bars and clubs, so it's a great place to get a little slice of home while you're abroad.

What's more, its coastal location means you get a chance to sample some of the great beach bars, where the fun spills out onto the sands and right to the edge of the ocean.

Wherever you travel in Cambodia, you're sure to have huge amounts of fun thanks to the variety of destinations. Cambodia has a lively party scene and is welcoming of tourists in its bars and clubs, so be prepared for a long night and a good time.
