For a day trip away from the sandy shores, drive a short 25 minutes to Varna, Bulgaria's third-largest city. There's plenty to do with loads of shops, restaurants and entertainment lining the streets. The bustling city is full of traditional Bulgarian charm that can be seen through the unique customs, architecture and stunning cathedral. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, built in 1886, is a spectacular monument in the heart of Varna. The construction mixes elements of the neo-gothic and orthodox styles and the grand exterior is topped by golden dome. Painted murals and colourful stained-glass windows were added to the interior in the 1950s and 60s. After taking in the wonderful Bulgarian heritage, have a leisurely browse among the quaint little shops and markets or wander down to the aquarium to see the exotic fish.
