A restful stay in a decent hotel
I’ve just come back from Malgrat/ Luna Park hotel and honestly I spent a lovely week there. I originally wanted to stay at its sister, Luna Club, but I don’t regret opting for Park at the last minute. All amenities are the same ( restaurant, pools, bar, spa & yoga) but the rooms. The club rooms are apparently a bit bigger and they have a fridge. A fridge would have been a must if we weren’t full board but despite the heat I didn’t quite miss it as would have only used it for water and there is a water fountain near the bar where I used to get fresh water from. Our room had air con that worked very well ( many people complained in here that there wasn’t air con so there is!!!) and a modern shower room. The balcony overlooked the big swimming pool and the sea. I only used the smaller adults only pool which was quiet but my husband went for a swim in the large one and it is warm ( again many people complained in here that the large pool is cold, but it isn’t!!). It is quite noisy though, as used by families with children. Now the food! On the first five days, we went to the restaurant for lunch and dinner at opening time, so there was o queue and a lot of choice of salads, fish, meats and a good range of fruits and cakes. Dishes are well presented in baskets, wood, newspaper like sets…In the evening, there is a plancha section where meats/ fish/ vegetables are cooked on the spot. However, on the last two days, we went down a bit late and there was a long queue and found out that not all dishes were refilled so there was much less selection so go early if you are a fussy eater! The restaurant staff is amazing so a big shout out to Youcef, Ihsan and all the others that always greeted us with a smile and a nice word! My review wouldn’t be complete without a word on yoga activities led mainly by Carmen, the yoga guru! She’s fantastic, she really is a star and brought light, energy and wisdom to my stay! Thank you so much Carmen, I won’t forget you! The only negative is housekeeping. In a week, my room was only made twice. The housekeepers would come in to change towels and empty the bins every day but didn’t have time to clean the rooms. When I asked one of them at 4.40pm, one day, to clean the bathroom because no one did in 3 days, she said to me that she had already done 1.40 overtime for which she wouldn’t be paid. She did take 3 mins to swipe it quickly and told me they gave her 2 floors to do on her own and can’t possibly do all rooms. That’s a shame! Additional Staff should be hired at busy times because these girls shouldn’t be treated like this. I then asked for sheets when I knew they wouldn’t come and changed the bed myself. Would I go back to Luna? Yes, definitely!
Basic hotel - unhelpful and grumpy staff
This hotel is more like a 2* not a 3*, we arrived at 11.00 and were told our room wasn't ready, and that out package didn't start until 13.00 , told to put our bag in the store and to come back at 13.00. No offer or suggestion made that we may like to stay in the bar area. The reception staff were very unhelpful and didn't explain any thing, provide any information on the local area and were on the whole unapproachable. The hotels location is of the main drag which has plenty of restaurants on a relatively quiet road but the area does look really quite run down Our room was a good size, but very basic, one plug point in the middle to the head board, or balcony was very small as we were in the corner room. sound proofing was poor, and we could hear conversations and more in the next room! We had the all inclusive package, meal times are shambolic, effectively its two hotel with one dinning room, resulting in long queues backing up the stairs to the restaurant in the the bar area. The food it self was plentiful, however i would be interested to see how much they throw away, the majority of the plates cleared from the tables had large amount left on them - one conversation we had was with a family who said there was lots of food but not much to eat! perhaps it wasn't what they were used to? i would how ever add the vegetation choices were very limited and un inspiring. I would add that the all inclusive package in terms of drinks stops at 23.00, the drinks menu is limited and not all on offer is included. The main Pool/ family area was clean with plenty of sun beds, i would however liked to have seen more sunshades/ parasols as there simply weren't enough to go around. I think i counted 12/ 14 for the whole pool area. I would add that there was an adults only pool the other side of the hotel, which wasn't well advertised.
AVOID - just got home to find all my money has been stolen from my purse! And that was only one problem!
This hotel looks good in the photos, not so much in reality. It is in Malgrat de Mar, a run down graffiti ridden town near to a nicer resort of Santa Susanna. Our first room was overlooking the bins and fields at the the rear of the hotel. It stank of fish and cannabis, it was noisy from the staff throwing and breaking all the glass bottles at the end of the night, and the mossies eat you alive because of the stench from the bins. My husband complained and we got moved, we were lucky because the others complaining were told the hotel was full and they had to stay were they were. The air con didn't work in the first room and the safe didn't work in the second room. We noticed the cleaners were using our toiletries and my husband's new aftershave. The food was miss and avoid, breakfast wasn't bad, but dinner was disgusting if you were brave enough to try it, nothing labelled and the so called vegetarian corner always has meat or fish in it, especially the pasta which is full of tuna and the mini rolls have salmon. I saw another post about money being stolen from the rooms but didn't think too much about it until I got back home, I opened my purse and found that the money that had been in there the evening before when we went to dinner, was long gone, they searched all the compartments and took only my English notes. Very clever to leave it to the last night when we had a very early flight the next morning. I'd left my purse in my hand luggage hold all for the next morning. And last of all the staff, it's almost that they begrudge talking to the British, they look disgusted that you bother to ask them a question. Oh and if you hire a car during July or August, the hotel charges you an additional 20 Euros a night to park it on rubble opposite the hotel. Save your money and go elsewhere.
