Max Brown Museum Square is situated in four typical Amsterdam Townhouses in the Jan Luykenstraat. This largely residential neighborhood distinguishes itself with beautiful tree-lined streets and gorgeous 19th-century architecture. There is no place in Amsterdam where you will find an area with so much style and allure. Not only is The Museum Quarter (the neighborhood around Museum Square) famous for its impressive collection of museums & galleries, but it's also a bursting forth with shops, cafes, bars & restaurants everywhere.

Great location, great beds - but just too small
My husband and I have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Max Brown Museum Square. The location is absolutely fantastic for seeing Amsterdam, for some wonderful local restaurants, and transport links to and from the centre and the airport. The bed was also extremely comfortable and made for a good night sleep. However, as previously reviews have alluded to our room (103) was not just small, it was tiny - definitely not suitable for two humans, and even as a single would just be about adequate. I understand from previous review feedback what the hotel are saying about this being a former Dutch townhouse, but assuming the room next door was a similar size the two rooms combined would have been a normal size room. The bathroom was ridiculous - no door handle or lock, so it was never completely closed, and we both yelped every time we tried to leave the shower cubicle due to the small gap we needed to leave through. I'm not high-maintenance when it comes to hotels (if it's clean and comfy, I'm generally happy), but it's clear a bit of room to manoeuvre wouldn't go a miss. We also tried the hotel breakfast - at 12.50 euro it really wasn't worth it, and local cafes are much cheaper with fresher food. So overall, the location of the Museumplein was wonderful, and we would return to the area, but not the hotel - it wasn't worth the money. NB- I will point out we booked through Tui, which I wouldn't normally do, but had a previous cancellation, and this was a replacement - at no point were we given a choice of room size. However, looking at the website, it says small rooms are 13m² - no way did our room measure that. They also failed to advise of the Tourism Tax; 36 euros paid before we had our room key.
All good
I had not been back to Max Brown since Covid started and was pleased to see that hotels are still there and functioning. I stayed at both the Canal and Museum district hotels on this trip. Since may last stay, the staff had all turned-over at the Canal hotel, but I reconnected at the Museum location. These are professionally run properties, and the service is very good. One comment I would like to leave. The lobbies of the hotels have been reorganized, and without getting into the details the early layouts and amenities were far more preferred - to me any. Made the place more appealing overall.
The gold star of our trip to Amsterdam!
Booking this trip to Amsterdam for the Christmas holidays was a result of misheard eavesdropping on conversations between my husband and 11 year old son. Not the best place to start, I know. Google Maps took us on a one-hour walkabout around central Amsterdam when trying to find the hotel and so, we reached the Max Brown Museum Square absolutely exhausted. The reception lady got our reservation dealt with immediately and was so courteous and cheerful, it made such a difference to our first impression of Amsterdam. The hotel is centrally located and ideal for transport links or walking, if that's your thing. The room was small, compared to some, but perfect for our family of four. The beds were extremely comfortable, with the only downside being that they were too high up for our 7 (built like a 6) year old to climb on. The sofa bed was her sleeping space of choice and from the one night I parted with the big bed to swap places with her, I can safely say it was comfortable enough for an adult too. We booked breakfast in with the room for our one-week stay at this hotel. The options available range from healthy to not so healthy. All of it was delicious and available in plenty. I think this is one of the very few hotels, where the staff clear breakfast food items away only after 11 am, when the breakfast service ends. I particularly remember with astonishment, when the butter slabs were refilled without being told or asked at ten minutes before breakfast closing time. In the UK, you'd be lucky to get anything at all if you turned up to a breakfast service half an hour before it closed. The staff (Eileen, Hugo and Sara among the few people we interacted with, there were two other Dutch people people at reception, but unfortunately I didn't get their names) were so helpful, whenever I went to them to ask them about places to visit or interesting things for our family to do. I went to them with the silliest things ranging from pronunciation of street names to why are there flags with three crosses everywhere. Not once did any of them complain or groan at me and ask me to just 'Google it'. The Travel Game that we included on the price of our room was a bit too complicated for our lot to get done in time, but could be interesting if it's two of you looking to discover a city. In summary, the hotel and the rooms are quaint and comfy. The staff are brilliant. The food is scrumptious. And we would definitely book here the next time we're in Amsterdam!
