Family holiday 2022
Just got back from the RIU overall we all had s good time, family of four, two teenage boys What you need to to know from our perspective is the following: This is a big hotel This hotel caters for large groups The pools are always busy This is not a couples hotel for quiet meals etc Meals times, unless you are first in you may have to wait 30 minutes depending on group size and what restaurant, buffet isn’t a problem TIP OF THE HOLIDAY, GET YOUR TABLE FIRST BEFORE YOUR FOOD, THEY WON'T RUN OUT OF FOOD BUT TABLES ARE HARD TO COME BY IN THE BUSY TIMES! SO MANY GUESTS JUST STANDING WITH A PLATE LOOKING TO GET SEATED WHILE THE FOOD GOES COLD? The food will seem a little repetitive if you have booked a two week stay The overall quality of the food we found good, the hotel caters for a lot of guests The drinks are locally sourced, so no well known brands, we don’t go for the alcohol Take a ball to play catch in the sea Pack your own beach shoes if you want to go Dunn Rivers Falls The staff are all engaging, you can tell when they are busy it's more of a games face approach, but they do need to turn a lot of tables and focus may be misinterpreted. We found the Argentinian and the buffet the best place to have our meals, big shout of to Romain and also Nathan from the Argentinian, who were very good when we attended, looked after us whilst the were some big groups in. Try some of the exercise classes, my wife found Cupcake’s sessions very good especially the TRX and Zumba classes, the gym is adequate with enough inside to get on with, the gym is quite small so you need to work out the quiet times. As I said previously the pools are busy so if you were expecting to do any lengths you may have to look towards the sea, can be a bit choppy on the Jerk Grille side by the water sports block, but does calm down by the time you get to the reggae bar, it's a decent distance as well by the time you go back a fourth a few times. The rooms are ok, housekeeping are good, shout out goes to Janiel Beadle who looked after us, the mini bar was well stocked and replenished, booking additions on the RIU app seemed to work, if you have a safe issue and they send a maintenance engineer not security you will need to re book, our request wasn’t followed up when this happened, but we didn’t chase either to be fair. The entertainment was ok, the family enjoyed the history of Jamaican music and the team do try hard with their productions, there should be something for everyone over the course of your stay, with a few live singers also performing. YOu can shake your stuff when the disco kicks off in the evening. Now for few suggestions for the hotel, The rooms use the key card method in a slot to keep the power on in the room which is good eco and power saving system, I was however, shocked, that the RIU is still using plastic straws, when you get a drink, once taken on to the beach a lot of the guests failed to dispose of the straws in the bins, so lots of straws are discarded on the beach and then in to the sea. Food waste is massive, in this day and age I would have hoped for a partnership with a local charity to provide a soup shop style initiative, supplying perfectly good food to the less fortunate, or at least allow the staff to take this home? They work very hard and I’m sure they would appreciate it more than the rubbish bags it gets dropped in to. I don’t think the food disposal isn't a problem just at the RIU, speaking to others coming back from similar sized hotels, it seems to be the easy option, it can’t continue in my view, I hope someone can sort this out. The images of the food were a concern when I checked on trip advisor so I will upload some I have taken, might be an idea for RIU to do some marketing in this area to reassure potential guests. So there we have it, a busy hotel, full of hustle and bustle, music and vibes, its not a quiet retreat, you will find its not the hotel or the staff that determine how your holiday goes but your fellow guests, this isn’t a personal butler experience, although some of the guests believe it to be, we tip where we felt an effort was made and a personal touch provided, would we come back, not sure.
Loved vacation at RIU Ocho Rios
I had an excellent fun filled adventurous trip to RIU in Ocho Rios. My family and I have no complaints except we wished we could have stayed longer. Every moment was well spent. We enjoyed all the services, food, drinks, activities/shows.
Flooded room and poor customer services
Last year I booked 4 junior suites at this hotel as I visited to attend a funeral. As we were preparing to attend the funeral water started pouring out of the bathroom like a river and it engulfed the room pouring over the balcony. I called reception and tried to get as many things onto the bed but all my belongings were soaked. The staff took some amount of time to come and only arrived after the 4th call as they say they were busy. I made a complaint to the head office and there response was to offer me points for the cost of my belongings, distress an inconvenience. It was a difficult trip to make at a very difficult time and the impact of the flood was enormous in terms of arriving at the funeral in time and additional costs we incurred. It seems that their points are absolutely worthless and are designed as a cheap alternative to actually compensating customers. I am pursuing this matter legally as this is just another example of corporate organisations taking advantage of customers who have paid thousands of pounds just because they think they can get away with it.
