Great stay… would recommend
Just come back from a 2 night stay at the Rock Hotel. Even though it is going through some renovations (in the quiet season), the staff were friendly, rooms were everything we needed, the view from the room was stunning and the decor was unique/ characteristic. The location on the way up to the upper rock does mean that it is on a hill, but this is hotel that you will not forget about (plus there is a bus that goes past it if you don’t fancy the walk).
Perfect !!
This was our first Christmas break at The Rock Hotel (24-27 December 2022) Everything was fantastic. Great food, lovely staff who could not do enough for us. Special mention to Abdullah, Natalia and Kevin, who we have often met when we have had lunch at the hotel. Had a chance to explore Gibraltar too, as the weather was just perfect. All in all a great experience which we hope to repeat again. Thank you to everyone.
Nice hotel with outdated colonial era behaviour
The hotel is located halfway up the rock and a nice place with a great view over the bay. It takes you about 10-15 minutes of walk to reach the historic center of Gibraltar, but be aware, that the way back requires some uphill efforts, so you might consider taking a cab or bus back. As for the room: The rooms are nice and aside from loose connectors in the wiring of the lamps by the bed and the fact that the socket on one side wasn`t working (room 321), it was ok for a week. We use to start our vacation days relaxed and don`t leave hotel rooms hurriedly, this why we got a call from the reception at 11:30 am on the first day and they asked us, when we intend to leave so the room service can clean the room. We agreed to skip this day`s room service. On the next day we left at about 11 but this obviously also didn`t meet the cleaning personnel`s expectations, which resulted in the fact that on the following days they crew led their assaults on the adjacent rooms from 09:00am on with an intensity that would make you think they would rearrange the furniture and do some refurbishment in parallel – supposedly they wanted to ensure that we get out prior to their well deserved noon break. In the end, this was their regular procedure during our entire stay. The reception staff was always very polite and obliging. When it comes to the gastronomic aspects the hotel has a nice terrace facing the bay and therewith is very attractive to sit for a while during sunset. However, if you would like to take a drink there you will either require some patience with the ignorant staff, that basically refuses to take notice of you, or go to the bar yourself. The treatment of the guests in this area is widely very arrogant and smug. So, if you are ok with being treated like a cash cow in exchange for a nice location this is your place, everyone else should avoid to book a stay. And please, Mr. Charles Danino, refrain from quoting one of your stenciled apologies that you use to post here. As a coaching hint, I would recommend to either work with your staff and educate them how professional hospitality works, or exchange significant parts of the team of waiters and cleaning personnel with professionals that know their business.
