September is the start of autumn in China, with temperatures beginning to cool off in northern regions, while the south is still warm and humid. Beijing is typically warm and fairly dry, while Shanghai is hotter with more rain forecast. Hong Kong is especially wet at this time of year, so make sure you take a waterproof jacket if you visit in September.
At this time of year, the capital Beijing has an average temperature of 20°C, reaching highs of 26°C and lows of 14°C. Around 50mm of rain’s expected in the city in September, so showers are short and infrequent. Further southeast in Shanghai, temperatures are slightly warmer with highs of 27°C and lows of 20°C, while it’s also wetter with between 75mm and 150mm of rain expected over the course of the month.
