Try one of the most popular snacks in Madrid as you take a pit stop at the San Ginés Chocolaterie. First opened in 1894, the chocolaterie has become a true institution, so make your way to Pasadizo de San Ginés and find out why their traditional churros with chocolate are loved by locals and tourists alike.
To get to the chocolaterie, walk through the side streets alongside the San Ginés church where you’ll find it tucked away. Stepping inside the traditional café, go straight to the counter and make your order. The churros will be cut in front of you from long ropes of freshly cooked batter.
Sit down at one of the white marble tables and relax on the green velvet seats as you dip the warm churros into thick melted chocolate and sip on your strong coffee. The churros are deep fried to crisp up the outside and keep the inside doughy, while the traditional chocolate is dark, bittersweet and very moreish.
Ask any local, and they’ll tell you that San Ginés serves up the best churros con chocolate in the whole city. During the day San Ginés Chocolaterie is visited by a steady stream of tourists, but at night time it comes alive as the Madrid residents pile in for their post-party snacks. If you’re out in Madrid until the early hours, follow the locals and head here for churros before going back to your hotel.
The chocolaterie is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so whenever you get a craving for sweet treats make sure you pay a visit to San Ginés.
