“If you book here, check in writing exactly what your room includes”

Good location and lobby, but a room that didn’t match the description We stayed at Granbell Hotel Shinjuku for 5 days and 4 nights in October 2026, booked through Agoda. The good: the location , close to transportation, shopping and many attractions. The lobby is beautifully designed, the elevators are elegant, and check-in was efficient and pleasant. Unfortunately, the room was a different story. The door was old and visibly scratched, and inside we found worn, outdated furniture and equipment. Most surprisingly, the room had no storage space at all: no closet, no shelves, nowhere to put clothes or belongings. Neither the hotel’s website nor Agoda’s listing mentions this, and we consider it essential information that guests should know before booking. We asked to change rooms and were told none were available. As I was recovering from back surgery, living out of a suitcase on the floor, bending down for every change of clothes, was genuinely painful. We asked to leave, and the hotel referred us to Agoda. Agoda promised several times on the day of arrival to get back to us, but never did. What should have been a pleasant stay became a very difficult one. If you book here, confirm in writing exactly what your room includes before you arrive.

“Exceptional service”

Stayed twice in October 26. Convenient location to access the subway to places of interest. Breakfast is good. Staff made us feel welcoming. Cleaning staff are fabulous. We would like to give special recognition to the front line staff Mr Keigo Mochizuki who was warm and professional. It’s rare to find staff who combine professionalism with such care. “Good for an overnight stay”

The hotel is in the lively Shinjuku area, about a 15 minute walk from the station. It can be reached from Narita best by Airport bus (direct connection) and then a taxi for 1000 yen in case of luggage. There is self check in, but the staff is helpful when needed. The room is, as always in Japan, small, but has all the requirements, although sometimes in miniature form: fridge, desk, chair, safe, hairdryer and even a small bathtub. There is A/C, darkening shades and it is very quiet. Breakfast is an extensive buffet style setup. There is a vending machine on the 1st floor. There is a rooftop bar on the 13th floor. In the neighbourhood there are many restaurants and convenience stores, also some subway stations. . The A/C has a life of it’s own, suddenly starting up at 20 degrees, maybe some erroneous programming. If you don’t mind the somewhat colourful neighbourhood, this is a good place for an overnight stay.

“Great Location and Staff, but the Rooms Need an Update”

The Shinjuku Granbell Hotel has a good location, fairly central to subway stations, shops, and restaurants. However, it is not directly on a main street and is somewhat tucked away in a side area, so it can feel a little hidden at first. Check-in and check-out were both easy and fast, and the staff were courteous throughout our stay. The restaurant staff in particular were very kind, welcoming, and attentive. Breakfast was one of the positives. There was a good variety of food with plenty of options for different tastes, including many choices suitable for Western guests. One of the main issues is the overall appearance of the hotel and the room. I would not say that the room itself was dirty, but several things made it look that way. The carpets throughout the hotel and inside the room looked very worn and stained, and there was a noticeable musty smell. The sheets and towels smelled clean, but instead of looking bright white, they had a grayish appearance that unfortunately made them look older and less clean than they actually were. The room itself was very poorly designed when it came to usable space. There was practically nowhere to place even a small suitcase, much less luggage for two people, even when traveling relatively light. This made the room feel cramped and inconvenient. There was also a musty smell inside the room. A bottle of room deodorizer or fragrance was provided, which suggested that the odor may be an ongoing issue. The bathroom water pressure was good. The room also had a very small refrigerator and an electric kettle. I think the rooms would benefit greatly from some updating. A fresh coat of paint and newer furniture would make a significant difference and would help the rooms look much more modern, fresh, and clean. Again, the room did not actually feel unclean, but the worn finishes, older furniture, carpeting, and grayish linens gave it that appearance. Overall, the hotel has some strong points, especially its convenient location, easy check-in and check-out, courteous staff, welcoming restaurant team, and varied breakfast. However, the worn appearance of the carpets and furnishings, musty smell, extremely limited luggage space, and dated finishes significantly affected the overall experience. With some renovation and cosmetic updates, the hotel could feel much more modern and inviting.
