Holidays in Protaras

Protaras is a purpose-built, family-friendly resort on Cyprus’ south east coast. It’s sprung up around one of the island’s best beaches, Fig Tree Bay, where you’ll find soft, golden sand that’s ideal for beach games or relaxing in the sun. There’s also a wide choice of water sports available if you’re feeling active and a water park and aquarium to keep the kids occupied. As you’d expect from a modern resort, there’s plenty of excellent restaurants, bars and cafés serving up local and international cuisine to cater to all tastes on your Protaras holiday. If you’re here with your friends and looking for something even wilder, party-town Ayia Napa is just around the headland.

Picture-perfect Blue Flag beaches, like Fig Tree Bay, draw beach lovers in droves to this corner of Cyprus. There’s also a fantastic choice of water sports on offer, or you can take a sailing trip to explore even further out to sea, including trips to the protected nature park area of Cape Greco. Back on (almost)-dry land, you’ll find Water World, considered by many to be the island’s best waterpark. It’s just a short 15-minute bus trip from the town and always a big hit with the kids (of all ages!). Feeling brave? On Protaras holidays you can get up close and personal with crocodiles, penguins, and exotic fish at the Ocean Aquarium. If you prefer your nature even wilder, there’s a network of trails for cyclists and walkers taking in dramatic views and unspoiled terrain.

Protaras has a selection of clean sandy, family-friendly beaches that have been awarded coveted Blue Flag status. Fig Tree Bay is possibly the best known, thanks to the long stretch of golden sand that gently shelves into the shallow waters. Here you can hire sunbeds and umbrellas for laid-back relaxing, or get the adrenaline pumping with a range of water sports on offer, such as wakeboarding or parasailing. There are also plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants nearby if you’re feeling peckish. For a more tranquil or secluded beach, try nearby Sirena Bay or Green Bay.

There’s plenty to keep the kids entertained during your holiday to Protaras. Top on most children’s must-do lists will be Water World, a thrilling water park that’s just a 15-minute bus ride away. As well as dozens of slides, a lazy river, and a selection of swimming and wave pools, you’ll also find areas just for little ones including a water playground at this complex, which is regarded as the biggest and best on the island. If your family is into marine wildlife they’ll love the Ocean Aquarium in Protaras. Here you can watch the penguins cool off in the pool, come face to face with a crocodile, and see if you can spot Nemo in among the spectacular exotic fish. You’ll also find cheeky parrots and cute raccoons.

The town of Protaras may be modern, but it’s located in an incredibly beautiful part of Cyprus, with rolling hills and a rocky coastline dotted with golden bays and nature trails. Walking and cycling in the area will reward you with wonderful views across the town and ocean. It’s well worth the climb to the Church of the Prophet Elias, which stands 100m above the town. At the top it’s an oasis of calm and you can see for miles. If you don’t fancy the climb on your Protaras holiday, then head out to sea on a boat trip from the harbor walls, where you’ll often spot the locals trying to catch some fish. There are lots of cruises that’ll take you to watch the sunset, or you can book to dive the calm waters where you might be lucky enough to spot turtles or whale sharks.
