    Canary Islands weather December

What’s the weather like in Canary Islands in December?

Visitors still enjoy coming to the Canary Islands at this time of the year because of the warm climate and the high amount of sunshine. The Canary Islands weather in December has pleasant temperatures, but the rainfall does increase and there’s the chance of stormy conditions in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma.

    Geographical influences

Canary Islands further west, like La Palma and Tenerife, generally have a higher level of rain in December than islands in the east and south, like Gran Canaria. The Canary Islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are nearer to the African coast and receive warmer air from the continent and are more sheltered from the winds. The Canary Islands can still have very clear skies in December because of the trade winds.

The weather in the Canary Islands in December has a pleasant average temperature of 14°C, with the night time average not usually going below 8°C across Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma. The sunshine levels are still fantastic in this winter month and December should see around ten hours of sunshine, with the sun not setting until about 6.45pm at the beginning of the month. So bring your sunglasses! The rainfall average is 139mm, so an umbrella will help you dodge the showers, but the average wind speed of just 13mph helps it feel quite mild. The average temperature of the Atlantic Ocean is 21°C, with western resorts like Lanzarote having slightly warmer water in December.
