There’s plenty to see and do in Playa de las Americas, whether you’re here with your friends for a week of dancing until dawn, or have the family with you for a fabulous beach holiday in the sun. Although it has a reputation as clubber’s central on Tenerife, holidays to Playa De Las Americas are just as good for families or couples. And with year-round sunshine, you can choose to take your break in high season, or during the quieter autumn and spring months. Adrenaline junkies will love the water sports on offer, while a trip into the interior of the island will take you on a journey of discovery through a unique landscape.

Join the revellers in the bars and clubs that fill the streets of this popular resort. Take a wander around the Patch, Veronicas, and Starco Centre if you want to check out some of the liveliest places for a night out. Tramps nightclub in Starco welcomes the world’s biggest DJs and pulls in up to 2,000 people a night. No wonder this self-styled “king of clubs” is one of the most popular places to visit in Playa De Las Americas. But it’s not just thumping techno in mega-clubs, as there’s plenty of comedy, family-friendly cabaret and karaoke on offer.

Take a trip to Siam Park and you’ll soon discover why the water kingdom is one of the biggest attractions on Playa De Las Americas holidays. There are thrills and spills galore as you wind around the Jungle Snake, or bounce along the Mekong Rapids. Grown-ups might prefer the warm bubbling waters of the Mai Thai River, as it meanders past waterfalls. While there are plenty of things for kids to do in Playa De Las Americas, the whole family will love a submarine safari for a close-up view of vividly coloured marine life.

Stroll along the dark and distinctive volcanic sands, where the beaches merge into one another and there’s plenty of room for everyone, even during the height of the summer. Playa del Bobo and Playa del Troya’s twin beaches all have plenty of sunbeds and parasols for simply lying back and lazing in the sun. Get sporty with water-based activities, and hire a jet ski for a spin around the water, or grab some friends for a ride in a banana boat. Carry on along the seafront promenade and bask in the golden sands of nearby Los Cristianos.

Playa De Las Americas is best for

Night owls: The resort is packed with great clubs that open into the small hours. Head to Tramps nightclub in Starco to dance to awesome mixes spun by some of the world’s biggest DJs.

Families: Let the kids go wild in the magical water kingdom of Siam Park, a great place to cool off and have some family fun.

Beach lovers: Stretch out on miles of soft volcanic sands, with azure water lapping at gently sloping beaches, perfect for paddling or simply lazing around soaking up the sun.

Weather & climate

Temperature: Usually in the 30s (°C)

Summers are hot and dry, with the thermometer hitting the low 30s almost every day. However, an onshore breeze takes the bite out of the heat, making it tolerable even on the hottest days. If you prefer things a little cooler then the best time to plan a Playa De Las Americas holiday is in the spring or autumn, when the mercury drops back down to a more temperate early to mid-20s (°C). Keep an eye on the forecast if you plan to come in November, as this is when you may catch the occasional (if very short-lived) downpour.

Getting around

By taxi: You can’t miss Tenerife’s white taxis, which are all metered. If you’re planning to go exploring then talk to your taxi driver and set a fixed price before you set off.

By car hire: Pick up a hire car from the airport or outlets in the main towns and go on your own adventure. It’s a good tip to hire a 4x4 as some of the smaller roads inland can be a bit ‘rural’!

By bus: Hop on one of the bright green buses nicknamed “guaguas” that zoom around Tenerife. They’re a cheap and cheerful alternative to taxis.

By tram: Travel in style on board one of the sleek, modern trams that ferry tourists between Santa Cruz in the south and La Laguna in the north.

Events

Dazzling costumes: Leave the clouds and the drizzle behind and join the fiesta in February and March when it’s carnival time. Get your dancing shoes on and party all night, when the island comes alive with dazzling costumes and joyful music that you won’t be able to resist! It’s time to take to the streets and party hard with the locals.

Colourful parades: Just a few weeks later, it’s time for the big Easter celebrations, with more processions and colourful parades as everyone gets into the festive spirit.

Dance party: The Arona Summer Festival raises the temperature even higher in August when international live acts and DJs turn the Olympic Stadium into one huge dance party.
