Recently returned from this hotel after waiting over 2 years to visit due to covid. Our expectations of the hotel were not met, on arrival we found the reception staff were not at all welcoming and informative, our room was not ready, wasn't told were we could store our suitcases( had to find out from a hotel guest).Told to return at 2.30 pm to be allocated a room, the room was in a far corner, on a low floor, very dark and dismal. We requested a room change but could not get a response from the receptionist, she showed no empathy whatsoever, she then put us onto the customer relations who told us there was no other room due to the hotel being full to capacity(the hotel was certainly not full) after having a lengthy conversation she told us to return at 5 pm to speak to Phillipe the reception manager. Not an ideal first day, wandering around the hotel not being able to unpack our cases. We returned at 5 pm to be told by the receptionist that Phillipe had been able to transfer us to a higher level with a pool view, this room was ideal but really felt that we didn't need to have witnessed all the upset on our first day(it could have been resolved earlier). The hotel is beautiful clean, our room was cleaned to perfection everyday. The food was good, plenty of choice but would like to have seen themed evenings like most hotels seem to offer. We visited the Italian restaurant twice during our visit which was good, the Asian restaurant one once which was brilliant, we were not able to get in the Madeiran restaurant, admission to these restaurants was on a first come basis, feel that they should have taken pre bookings to avoid people being disappointed. The main buffet room felt like a large canteen, noisy, children running around,we were really greatful for the outdoor seating were we sat for all meals. We would have expected table cloths for a 5 star hotel, not plastic tables The waiter and bar staff service was brilliant, they all worked really hard(Estepho really stood out),pardon for the spelling of the name. Plenty of sunbeds and parasols around the pool,no little tables to place your drinks on.Never had a change of beach towels in 10 days, no information on whether this facility was available. No lifeguard at the pool which I found very hard to believe. The entertainment was OK but repetitive, it was repeated on a weekly basis A 5 star hotel would have waiter service in the entertainment area so that people are not getting up and down for drinks during the acts. The surrounding reception area/piano bar was beautiful, plenty of comfortable seating. The view over the infinity pool looking onto the sea was amazing.

Not as good

Not for us now. Unfortunately not adults only anymore so won’t be returning. We know things change but they seem to just want to take any bookings they can and fill the place. Trying to cater for everyone. Standards gone. We realise people don’t want to dress up but once you start lowering your standards to anything goes everything goes down. I felt sorry for the staff who work hard all the time plus trying to deal with some of the ignorant and inconsiderate guests there as you can tell they weren’t happy. The quality of the food has gone down. Staff very rarely seen, should have been wiping down changing the serving utensils regularly etc. in the main buffet. The drinks were good, except the wine which was cheap plonk. The three restaurants were ok - the Kai the only one we liked. Not enough staff to clear tables in the main buffet just like a big canteen. Not relaxing at all. Staff spent all their time wiping tables and relaying not seeing to the guests dining at the time. Very young children in the buffets unsupervised touching and messing with the food is really off putting. Also no adults only pool just one big kids playground with inflatables. Definitely not 5 star anymore - such a shame.

Stayed with my wife for a week mid June.Very clean property with excellent rooms ,again spotlessly clean.Food was fresh and plentiful with a great choice ,plenty of gluten free and vegetarian options.Themed restaurants where also very good .Plenty of sunbeds .Bars where reasonable ,however no dark rum on any of the bars my drink of choice ,4 decent whiskeys Bacardi Smirnoff etc ,lager was ok not a lager drinker and wine was passible.Negatives ,there where a couple for me ,no nightclub ,was advertised as having one .Entertainment was hit and miss ,couple of really decent singers /groups ,but folk dancing and a belly dancer is a bit poor .Needs a decent singer /act every evening .Daytime was also poor tbh bingo and a quiz was ok but not enough on really.Biggest negative was a couple of really badly behaved children ,sorry but in a restaurant kids screaming the place down should be asked to leave if their parents are failing to control them.
