Sunny Beach – best for big resort facilities & water parks
Sunny Beach is the headline family resort for parents who like plenty of choice.
On Sunny Beach family holidays, you’ll find a long, sandy beach, large hotels with pools, kids’ facilities, restaurants, mini-golf, amusement parks and enough activities to keep the kids entertained from breakfast to bedtime. The central beach also holds Blue Flag status for 2026, recognising environmental and water-quality standards.
Waterpark fun
Action Aquapark sits in Sunny Beach, with splash areas for little ones, family slides and bigger thrills for teens. Where we’d book
My pick is the northern end of Sunny Beach, towards Sveti Vlas. It gives families a useful middle ground: you’re close enough to the main beach, resort entertainment, shops and restaurants, but away from the nightlife.
The central Flower Street area is where I’d be cautious with younger children. It’s packed with bars, clubs and late-night entertainment, so noise can continue well after bedtime. The southern end can work for families if you want to be closer to Nessebar and prefer a quieter base.
Parent tip: Don’t judge a hotel by its name alone! Open the map, check what sits immediately around it and look for recent reviews mentioning nighttime noise.
Golden Sands – best for beach + forest setting
Golden Sands gives families the best of both worlds: a big sandy beach with a forest backdrop. It has the facilities you’d expect from a popular Bulgarian resort, but the surrounding greenery takes the edge off the built-up feel. With a Blue Flag beach and Golden Sands Nature Park on its doorstep, it’s a great choice for families who want beach time without the full-throttle atmosphere of Sunny Beach.
Why families like it
There’s plenty beyond the beach, including Aquapolis waterpark, watersports, playgrounds and boat trips. The mix of sea and woodland gives the resort a more relaxed, outdoorsy feel – handy when everyone needs a break from the sun lounger.
Where we’d book
I’d choose the quieter edges of the resort, rather than a hotel directly on the busiest strip. You’re still close enough to walk to the beach and restaurants, but evenings feel less hectic.
Parent tip: Golden Sands is hilly in places, so check the walk to the beach before booking, especially with a buggy.
Nessebar – best for history, beaches + character
Nessebar is where a classic beach holiday meets a dose of Bulgarian history. Families can swap the pool for cobbled streets, ancient churches and sea views, then be back on the sand before anyone starts complaining about tired legs. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town gives Nessebar far more character than a typical purpose-built resort.
Why families like it
For family holidays to Bulgaria, Nessebar offers variety without needing to travel far. Beach mornings can turn into Old Town adventures, with historic sights, little shops, cafés and ice-cream stops. Then Aqua Paradise nearby offers a full day of slides and splashy fun when everyone fancies a change of pace.
Parent tip: Head to Nessebar’s Old Town early, before the midday heat, and pack water and snacks for the little ones.
Albena – best for toddlers and younger children
If your Bulgaria family holiday needs to run at toddler speed, Albena is a very good place to start. This greener, quieter resort feels a world away from busier parts of Bulgaria’s coast, with a long sandy beach, family-friendly hotels and a much calmer evening atmosphere.
Why families like it
The resort is suited to little legs and early bedtimes, with a wide sandy beach, shallow water and lots of room for sandcastle-building and paddling. There are also child-friendly activities such as cycling and mini-golf for ages 5+. Older children can try some of the watersports with appropriate supervision. And Baltata Nature Reserve offers a gentle change of scenery for a family walk, too.
Where we’d book
I’d stay close to the beach, especially with toddlers. Short walks between the hotel, pool and sand make life considerably easier when you’re carrying nappies, snacks and a child who decides walking isn’t for them anymore.
Unlike Sunny Beach, Albena doesn’t have a major nightlife strip, so evenings tend to be peaceful and family-focused.
Parent tip: Pack beach shoes for little ones, as the sand can get hot during the afternoon.
All Inclusive: how to get the best family value
All Inclusive sounds wonderfully simple, but there are a few things to check first. For Bulgaria All Inclusive family holidays, it’s worth comparing the meals, drinks, kids’ facilities, activities and transfers before choosing your package.

Near Nessebar, Aqua Paradise is a brilliant waterpark resort worth the short trip for its bigger slides and pools, while in Albena, Aquamania is the obvious pick if you've got younger children in tow.
Is Bulgaria cheap for a family holiday?
Bulgaria can offer excellent family value, particularly with All Inclusive packages. The trick is to compare the full cost, including flights, transfers, meals, drinks and children’s facilities. A slightly pricier hotel with more included can actually be the better bargain once you’re there.
