Currency

The currency of Zanzibar is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). It’s a closed currency, so you can’t exchange your money before you arrive in Tanzania.

Bank notes come in denominations of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000. Coin values are 50, 100, 200 and 500. Local ATMs can have high withdrawal fees for foreign bank cards, even if your own bank doesn’t charge you for withdrawing overseas.

You may find it useful to bring some US dollars with you, especially if you’re getting a visa on arrival, as they are accepted alongside the local currency in many tourist areas.
